So im seriously considering joining a fraternity.

i never thought i would say this but i think i might actually do it. if you saw me in real life, you wouldn't think i was frat material, but the past few days of rushing i have made more friends than in the past 2 weeks of being at school. before i take the leap i want some honest opinions.do you think its a worthwhile venture? is anyone here in a fraternity?

i've considered joining a frat many MANY times. in some ways their lifestyle is very appealing. they always have somewhere to hang out, always have a shitload of girls around, free booze and parties. but then i look at the PEOPLE in those fraternities. and i look at all of the sororities. i HATE them. i can't relate to them.

now, i'm a nursing major, or 'mursing' major if you will. i'm constantly surrounded by sorority girls that have absolutely NO personality. sure, they might have a hot ass, but they are all a bunch of 2 bit whores.

the greek system is almost like the celebrity status us campus, at least at my school. they tell you EXACTLY HOW to dress, you HAVE to have a north face jacket, shitty leather shoes with the tassels, the viser, the mirrored glasses with the kavu crokies. after having friends go through it, hearing about the SHIT they had to do...i'm glad as FUCK i'm a god damn independant.

not all fraternities are created equally. They all are different.
Many frats do fit the sterotypical frat description.

But some frats are far more focused on academics than partying. Just look around, ask questions, get a feel. Also, if this is your first semester at school . . . i would suggest living in a dorm for a term after you have rushed/ pledged and then move in. This way you will meet far more people outside of your frat contingent.

that is true...dorm life was the shit at one time.

the people you meet smoking cigarettes are a bajillion times cooler than those in frats.

Lame...have fun paying for friends.

I knew people who were in frats and I got to go to their parties and have a good time while they worked the event and stayed mostly sober for the whole night. The only times you get to drink is when its all dudes.

Does your school have a club rugby team. Now those guys know how to party, you'll make all kinds of friends (rugby players tend to be tight-knit but not nearly so strongly cliquish), and you'll have to deal with minimal hazing type bullshit.

Join up man. If you like the people then there's really no reason not to (unless you can't afford it.) I'm not technically in a frat because my grades aren't good enough to join, but I live in the house and I'm living in the house again next year. These guys are my best, and only true, friends at this school.

I go to OSU, and am from Syracuse, so I know about frat boy clones. And while frat life isn't that big here at OSU, I've not once seen a person, on any campus, wear fucking leather tasseled shoes. That's some shit my dad would wear when he had to dress really nice for work.
