question for workout warriors
#7768576 - 12/17/07 08:52 AM (16 years, 1 month ago) |
|

how come, i've got arms that are about 3 times the size they used to be yet.. I can only do 35 pushups in a row compared to when they were tiny and i could eek out 25.
I mean only 10 :/
I can bench around 160-170 once i get warmed up too.
Is there something about muscles i don't understand. Cuz i figued i cuold get 50 by now.

Well first...are you taking supplements?
Second...how much time are allowing for your muscles to grow between workouts?
IDK if you know, when you work out, your breaking down your muscle tissue(Hence the burn). Its critical in building muscle that you allow your muscles time to rebuild themselves between work outs. Or else your muscles are growing but not getting any stronger.
Working out 3/5 days is ideal, that way you get 24 hours in between workouts. While obviously a lot of people work out a lot more, they usually cut the amount of time and increase the intensity, that way they are still getting the same work done and still have proper time for muscles to rebuild.
If you use supplements you may just be putting on "water weight" which means your probably using too much supplement compared to your workout habits. So your muscles while may appear bigger, are simply being inflated with water. Creatine is notorious for building water weight not muscle.

i disagree on the creatine thing
when you take monohydrate creatine you cycle it on and off but the ethyl ether creatine doesnt really need to be cycled but i prefer to anyway
you do notice a diff in pump gain between on and off but after awhile you adjust and theres no diff at all
you only drink 500 mls of water with each dose and all bodybuilding experts will tell you to drink at least a gallon of water a day even if you arent on any supps
totally agree with the resting and stuff tho
im trying that max-ot routine someone mentioned here and am on week two and im sore
he'd probably do 65 pushups with creatine

How often do you work out. I haven't worked out in years and just busted out 55 pushups right behind my desk to see how many I could do. I have a physical labor job maybe thats why I can do so many? Maybe your doing something wrong in your workouts. My arms feel like jello...

Maybe you still have a weak chest. I don't know why you are relating arm size to bench press and pushups. Those exercises use mostly chest/shoulders. Strengthen those muscles and you will be able to do more pushups.
Also, what is the point of being able to do 50 consecutive pushups?

Yeah I complete agree...creatine used in the CORRECT way will give great results. But I've seen guys eat spoonfuls of the raw powdered stuff at a time, the amounts and the way they used it was completely bogus and b/c of it they gains lots of water weight.
But absolutely if your using creatine the correct way with the right amounts of H20 and exercise, you'll get great results.

yeah i was taking the powdered mono creatine and it bloated me but the tablets are really good compared ive been working out at home now for over a year now and plateaued but i was only working on my arms, chest and shoulders
ive only just started working on my back/legs and abs last week
my legs kill me but its all mind over matter and rest and diet
thats what the max-ot regime stresses the most, rest and heavy exertion in short bursts with shorter reps but more sets
squats are the killers but the most important exercise of all and i hate that fact, core strength ftw
im realizing where ive been fucking up
its all pretty good now

Yes, I think it's due to a weak chest. I just picked up a men's health magazine and read a pretty interesting workout routine using just pushups in order to maximize the tension on the chest. Right in the nick of time too.
The point to it is that i want to be able to do that many consecutive pushups. In fact I want it to be at 100 before it's all said and done.
I don't have a job at the moment because school just ended and i'm a full time college student. This should give me all the time in the world to get bust.

they feel like jello because you do HAVE muscle, you just don't keep them tight through working out probably.

theres your problem goal for a 200 pond person
Calories: 3120 (200 x .65) 24 = 3120
Protein: 413 grams (1654 calories, 53%) (3120 x .53)/4 = 413
Carbohydrates: 289 grams (1156 calories, 37%) (3120 x .35)/4 = 289
Fat: 35 grams (315 calories, 10%) (3120 x .10)/9 = 35
put your weight in pounds where the 200 is for your calorie intake per day then work out the rest

Slow twitch muscles are for endurance, but aren't as massive as Fast twitch muscles.
Fast twitch muscles are more massive and for strength.
You can't do many more pushups because your slow twitch muscles haven't had much gain.
Do some low weight/high rep workouts on your chest and arms. Do multiple sets of push ups every other day.

Yes you have two types of muscle fiber that each have their strengths and weaknesses. Each type should be trained differently to see the most gains. If you train for mass, you will get strength and mass increase but you won't see much stamina growth. If he wants to increase his reps on pushups, then he needs to focus on training his slow twitch muscle fiber. ie... lower weight/higher reps

were you going ALL the way to the ground, holding for a second then raising up? Hands should width apart doing perfect technique everytime.
Kind of odd that unless your picking up logs all day that you could just go straight to the ground and pump out 55 without warming up or nothing :/

I think your endurance is a problem and you're a pussy.
Men that have well developed testicles understand that they can do more rather than go on a message board and complain about how much of a pussy they are.
If you did 20 push ups once a day, every day, I'm sure you'd find it easier to achieve 100 push ups.
Maybe you lack discipline or maybe your parents were too busy complimenting you all the time instead of conditioning your mind to strive for better instead of settling for what you 'think' is all you can do.
The mind is a wild thing. But a tremendous pussy is another. In your case, they're holding hands and the pussy is the dominant bossy bitch.
