Cacti Questions
    #766299 -

Couple of questions for you cacti experts.

All my T. Peruvianus? are going light green at the top, I think its new growth isn?t it, I?m not sure so could someone comfirm it, here?s the pics.

Next, I have a sick pedro, (picture below), is this sunburn, rot, or something else? Its only like this on one of my 30 baby pedros.

Yes, the light green is new growth. There's a technical name for that area that I currently forget

As for the sick puppy, that looks like sunburn to me....I seem to remember sunburn causes bluing....but I should really check on that. They do look a little small for lots of direct light. Probably shouldn't get more than an hour/day of direct light (I presume they're a few inches tall?).

Yeah, they were sent to me about a month ago, so the lighting conditions have changed. I think if anything they are getting not enough direct light, but I'm moving in a month or two and they'll have a south facing conservatory to live in then

I don't think it will be sun burn, not in the UK, we haven't seen the sun in a long time!!!

True lol. They did get a few solid days where they probably had upto 5 hours of direct sunlight (crappy east facing window lol), but I don't know how much light they got before so its hard to tell.

Like I said, its only on one of them, and most of the other babies seem to be growing well so I'm not too worried.

5 hours direct sunlight on a cactus that's not used to a lot of direct sun is enough to sunburn them, trust me....they need to be gradually acclimatized (like most plants)

you wouldn't put your 5 year old child in the sun for 5 hours without sun block

All mine are in front of a south facing window and all get direct sun light , but no sun burn. They were placed there from the day they arrived. I think in the UK sunburn is probably not much of a concern. Even my new seedlings get sun light from a a south facing window (although through 3 layers of glass) and they are doing great. I have seen some cacti, which looked like that but alot worse, they were pretty much neglected, not much soil, no feed, low light and hardly ever watered. Could you ask the person who sent it the conditions they were grown?

Regards

doesn't heat play a factor in sunburn as well?

High Dante,

Sunburn has mainly to do with a lack of fresh air supporting the cacti.
And offcoarse sun has a great influance on those small greenies.
I use a shade cloth for my small one's. The seem to grow better as the conditions aren't that hostile.

High RM,

The light green on top tells you the cacti is awkening after the "winterstop''.
What actualy is happening is that the roots are growing as they intend to do in their pre-growing season. Roots need to be repaired after the dry period.

My experience is that after the rooting period the real growth will start. If you water to heavy in the rooting periode the cacti will stretch and create a waste. In the after season it tends to make roots again.

Warmth en fresh air will do them better than direct sunlight.
