some cacti questions
    #1321503 -

Hi, I recieved some Peyote seeds so I plant planting them soon
I have a sprouted little san pedro, but everyday I should clean some green stuff on my soil(altho Its nice and fresh), so I dont want my future cacti to have this problem. Should I sterilize them before planting? And oh yeah is there a permanent way to get rid of this green thing(fungicide ?)

Scrape off the green stuff deep enouhgh so you don't see it anymore, plus a little more to be safe, then spray with h2o2.

As for your new peyote seeds, i'd suggest sterilizing the soil before planting the seeds in them just to be safe than sorry. Microwave your soil mix 1 minute for each cup of soil you're going to use. Let it cool so it's slightly warm, then plant your seeds in it shallow and cover lightly with sifted and sterilized soil.

This happened to my baby's a month or so after germinating.  I kept scraping off the green stuff, but it eventually came back; each time inching its way closer to the baby's.  When it got too close for comfort, I took the plastic wrap off and let them fend for themselves.  They were probably 3 mos old by this point.  Now, almost a year later, they are doing wonderfully!

Thank you for the beautiful seeds; you know who you are!

Buy some fungicide from your local garden store and apply it to the soil before planting. I'm sure you can purchase some kind of fungicide without an applicators license. It will increase germination and decrease green nasties. Sterilization won't do a complete job since your dirt will be exposed after sterilization. Occasional fungicide applications to the soil wont hurt the cactus, just read the label.

I've read bad things about fungicides and seed germination, sterilization has the risk of not being so sterile after some exposure, but he should close off his system to the outside with some sort of covering or saran wrap. It works way more times than not.

Fungicides are chemicals used to kill fungi, mold, mildew, ect.. I can't remember any major brand names right now. I've had to use some in the past because my seeds and young sprouts were getting moldy because of humid conditions. Fungicides may be hard to find depending on where you live, and aren't totally necessary. You shouldn't need any, unless you are having a real problem with mold killing your sprouts.
