Overlay or good casing colonization?(pics)
    #763735 - 07/21/02 04:22 AM (15 years, 8 days ago)

This is day 4 after initiating the fruiting stage. The darker pan are EQ?s in a peat/coco coir mixture, the lighter brown tray is Cam?s w/ straight coco coir. Are we talking overlay here or just a good even layer of colonization? The coco coir seems to be colonized fairly evenly but the peat/coco mix is a bit more centralized on the left. My friend is hoping to see pins in a few days but he has been having a hard time getting the temp lower than 83F but the past two days they have been sitting at 78F/99 RH.

He haven?t tried cold shocking these trays as many of the posts around here say that it doesn?t need to be done but if he doesnt see any pins after day 8 he is going to try and cold shock it.

Any feedback would be appreciated...

Just let them sit.
They are developing everlay, but it?s not such a big deal with P. cubensis.
They will form pins eventually, just keep them moist and humid.

I?m trying to figure out if the problem is that they them sat in the incubation chamber a day or so too long after casing or if the problem is temps that are too high. I?m leaning towards temp being the problem b/c when fruiting was initiated....here is what they looked like the day fruiting was started....

I usually throw mine in the grow chamber the minute i see mycellium peaking through the layer and it looks decently even

I figured temp was the problem.....but I'm not sure how to reduce it. I've seen a few ideas in some threads but messing around w/ the chamber at this stage isn't a good idea. Waiting till the end of this stage is what is going to happen. A complete redesign of the chamber is being formulated now and is going to closely follow the design in this thread:

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=Forum2&Number=756949&page=4&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1

The chamber used was just a prototype to see what conditions would be like. Now its time to make the setup look more professional and correct any things that are wrong w/ the current design.

Are you working with PRs? There are a few strains that will continue to colonize when fruiting is initiated.

Next time patch case to promote even colonization. I find casing colonization to be crucial to aquire a even pinset.

Patching was done 2x on the EQs and not at all on the Cams as a pretty even distribution of mycellium poked through after a few days. The day fruiting was initiated was the day temps went up for a string of days so the environment didnt change much moving from the incubator to the fruiting chamber besides being exposed to 12 hrs light. Since light is pretty much for telling the fruit which direction to grow, I'm pretty sure it was the temp which made the mycellium spread through the casing rather than devoting energy to producing pins. The past day or so the spread has not been nearly as quick as the first few days since it has been a bit cooler...pins should start to form in the next few days.

If not, well you just gotta love trial and error

yeah, the even pinset is a doll. trial and error with fungus is fun too.

one of my PR casings looked similar except severly overlayed, I did a bit of deep scratching and recased with some coir and now it`s dooing great.
Another thing I found was using straight verm with a bit of coir over for your first flush, I`m talking PR growing now.
I find that the verm layer tends to slow the overlay process and the coir heps it to have a nice casing over the verm.
So far it`s fruiting very nicely, some nice big fruits, and a descent flush it would seem.
