Mixing Mycobag Substrate
    #7618843 - 11/10/07 01:34 PM (16 years, 2 months ago)

I'm about to pop open my colonized grain-based mycobag to crumble and case it, the strain of choice being B+.

Could I use the substrate from another sealed identical (uncolonized) bag to add to the casings? (assuming all will be done very clean carefully) I'm thinking either of mixing up the colonized/uncolonized sub about 50/50, or putting the colonized on top and leaving the fresh sub on the bottom of the tray. Is this a recipe for disaster?

no, you cannot.
yes, it is a recipe for disaster.

your bags contain sterilized grain.
no sterilized substrate can be exposed to air before it's fully
colonized.
it will contam 99% of the time.

if your other bag was of a pasteurized substrate, not containing
any grains at all, you could do it.
but it's not.

so no.

just inoculate it and colonize it.
just like the other one.

I would...but I ran out of spores, and since I don't feel like buying more I'm just waiting on more shrooms to get spores. I thought it seemed too good to be true, so I'm not surprised that's not kosher....thanks for the response!
