Mixing up substrate: the order matters!
    #539304 - 02/03/02 01:17 PM (21 years, 7 months ago)

Hey Y'all,
I just stumbled on something that all of you gurus are going to chuckle about but newbies like me really should pay attention to. When you mix your BRFmix, it DOES matter in what order you combine the ingredients. The first time I put everything in at once. Now those few jars I have left are colonizing at a very slow rate and here's why: vermiculite holds water, so it should be mixed with the water first, then add flour. If you put everything in at once, you don't get vermiculite particles covered in flour (food supply), and the mycelia have to work harded to get nutrition, and then they grow more slowly. Even if you give them perfect growing conditions, their growth rate will be retarded. My babies are growing ok, but I'm at day 22 of incubation, and it will be at least another week or 2 before I can birth those now furthest along! Just wanted to put that out there so others could learn from my mistake.

my monkeys uncle mixes his all together at once and has no problems with colonization....do you keep your jars in an incubator or are they sitting at room temp?? Also try losening the lids..could be c02 buildup

Yeah, you found the proper way to do it.
Read http://www.fungifun.org/pf/pfdummies_en.htm to see it in pictures.

How you mix it has nothing to do with anything other than it's easier to mix that way because the brown rice flour won't become lumpy like it will if you pour water onto it and then mix it....end of story.

And being it easyer to mix is not a reason to do it this way?
Besides other reasons like getting the water content right....

Mixing the vermiculite with the flour and then adding water is exactly how my distant relatives Rabbi ended up with 1/2 pint jars that are still colonizing after 6 weeks. The subsrate got lumpy. The other half of his jars that he mixed verm + water and then added flour are already on their second flush. So order does matter, for some people. As with all things YMMV. Do what works best for you.
