Bulk substrate - 1inch matured mushrooms (wtf?!)

so i got a straw log that took over a week for the pins to grow about an inch tall and i noticed that the veils are starting to tear...
kept at room temperate with a plastic sheet draped over it and peeled away once a day as recommended.
i have never gotten this before, just wondering what could possibly be going wrong and what i can do.
should i pick them all asap, dunk and hope for a better second flush?
thanks

well, if the veils have torn, yes, pick them.
what went wrong? well not sure. I have a couple suggestions of possibilities.
lack of water. your straw log is a pumping station now. pumping the water it holds into the cells of the developing mushrooms. when the water runs out, the veils open and the growth cycle begins to halt. mushrooms need water to grow. straw logs are easy to have dry out on you. maybe yours dried out on you.
genetics. slim but possible chance. using multispore, which I assume you are doing, would give you a better shot at varied results. you could have a strain fruiting that just shoots out small fruits, but it's more likely a moisture problem.
did you mist the straw log every single day, frequently?

1 inch is a tiny substrate depth, i can't even consider that bulk, go 3 inch minimum next time

it's not a 1 inch substrate depth. they're 1 inch mushrooms growing off of a straw log.

I had this problem back when I was first starting out. I was misting with a bottle which once contained cleaning chemicals. Found out petroleum caused unfavorable mutations, mostly early maturation.
If you're re-using an old spray bottle I would suggest going to WalMart and buying a clean empty spray bottle to mist with instead. If this isn't the case, I would look into other possibilities of some sort of chemicals getting their way into your substrate.

did you mist the straw log every single day, frequently?
soaked for a total of 3 1/2 hours for pastuerization(2 hours presoak), and dunked for 12 hours before birthing, and just kept it on my shelf like i normally do.
what i've heard from other people, and have had success with in the past, is that you don't need to mist. just put on a shelf with plastic draped over it and you're good to go.
why do you say straw logs are easy to dry out?
yea i've heard it could just be a poor substrain due to multispore. i'm just totally flabbergasted that i get like 100X more yield normally and this happens.
i was getting the fluffy growth that occurs from too high humidity so i let it sit for just a few hours with the plastic off and it stopped growing. i don't think it was long enough for it to dry out, drops of water are still forming on the plastic and the surface still feels moist. i'll try misting it frequently for the second flush just in case
if anyone has had this happen to them and you were able to correct it for future flushes, let me know how you did it!
also, any idea if the log will have an abnormal amount of flushes because the mushrooms came out so teeny?
thanks for you input mitch!
