can too high RH prevent pins
    #753540 - 07/17/02 12:10 PM (22 years, 2 months ago)

I know at one week, u still need to have patience ..but can having too high a humidity prevent pins from forming?

Only once has the humidity been at 97% and that was when i opened the lid and it took almost forever to
come down. I calculated it and it took 30-40 minutes to come down 1%. I have a digital hygrometer
that reads HH when it gets beyond 99% but when i see HH that could mean almost any number! The temp is at a nice
86F. I dont know if this may help but say i freeze some ice cubes with distilled water and placed a few cubes
in there, would that help bring the rH down somewhat? Im not too worried about the temp cus i dont
have a/c and its quite hot here so i know it will go up quite easily.
What is the longest time u had in seeing pins appear?

What strain are you growing? My RH is always near, if not above 99% and I have no problems with all of the Thailand strains, GT, B+, and Acadian Coast. Give it some time, a huge part of this hobby is waiting.

Wollongong strain.

The rH is alwayz reading a HH and i dont even mist at all...it really forces me to open the lid and TRY to lower it.
Why lower it u say? Because when it reads HH , it really doesnt tell me how high it is and i dont want it
at say 120 % . At least if it sayz 97, or 98 i know that it's right there .
Yea, i know about the waiting....LOL

Worth also mentioning the relative humidity is a measure of airs vapour capacity, which changes with temperature.

And also worth mentioning that RH doesn't have to be 100% for it to rain

Also if you look at the instruction manual to your hygrometer, you'll find that it has a margin of error. For example, my radioshack hygro (which I hear is a good brand) is only accurate within +/- 7% once the rh gets above 80...so maybe it really isn't that high.

If you have an enclosed container and you cool it down, the absolute amount of water in the container will remain the same, the relative humidity will RISE.

How sure are you of that gauge? Take a ziplock baggie and
put the gauge in it, take a capfull of salt and add 3 or 4 drops
of water. Don't over water the salt! Seal it up. In about 6 hrs
the gauge should read 75% If it doesn't, note how wrong it is
and go from there. Maybe even throw it away.
86 is nice for incubating. Not for pinning. You really need to
drop it about 10 degrees. If that's not possible, coldshocking
in the frig overnight might help.
If you're really not misting, start, and see if that helps. I'd
almost bet your gauge is wrong, and the temp isn't helping.
Just a thought.

Oh ur talking about calibrating it WakingUpLate (the salt and zip lock trick)..
but thats only for analog and not digital ones. I was told that digitals ones are already self calibrated and
quite accurate so im just assuming that i have a somewhat precise reading.

Im pass the incubation and into the pinning stage *YAY*
If i start misting the Rh will rise and i dont really want that (its too high at the moment)
Im just keeping the lid open a lil bit and the cake is doing alright...but sure wish
I had more than 4 pins. =|

Interesting site there anno Bad Clouds FAQ....thx
Will read it thoroughly and that should give me a better understanding of rH , air and water vapor.

Thx all

From what I know, pinning results has more to do with the air exchange, and cooler temps, not the RH. When you start seeing fruiting, then you may want to worry about your RH a little more. I lower my RH from 100% to 82-89% when they fruit to the size of a pea. Its hard to maintain an exact RH of 85% (Optimal), but if the RH is in the low and high 80's while fruiting, that is better than the low 90's to 100%....Im open to any mistakes i may have made in this reply.

air xchange???>>u mean fanning , right?
cooler temps??>>> When u start seeing pins, isnt the temp suppose to be around 75-85F? Anything lower will take longer and anything above 100 will destroy the mycellium. My pins r the size of a pea and the humidity has been around high 90's...ur's sound a bit too low for cakes northernsoul? Great for casings but....

Oh ok, for some reason I missed that you were doing cakes..hmm, well i dont do cakes, ive dont it once, and the RH was 100% the whole way. Fanning 2-3 times a day (air exchange)..Good luck. Just read up on it more, Ive spent months reading up on casings, so cakes arent really my thing. Have you thaught about doing casings? You get way more doing it that way. I did casings from the very begining, and i did well. You just have to do your homework.
