No, no magic nin the puffballs. Some of them are 'edible' but some are highly toxic. The gut of the things, As you probably have noticed, is composed of mostly just spores, sot there's not a whole lot to eat. The Audobon Guide has good coverage on puffballs.

Actually. puffballs are not toxic-

scleroderma- earth balls, those hard knoby things under trees with the grey black stinky insides- those are poisonous.

As long as they are soft and white on the inside they ar OK, but only OK- they are gastronomically boring.
