Scleroderma (reae?) UPDATED
    #13463294 - 11/10/10 12:44 PM (10 years, 11 months ago)

Found in late October, growing in the gravel driveway.  Th first picture's splitting open was a natural occurrence, the third picture's hole reveals a very dark inside.

I can't find much info on this species. But I read in the key on mushroomexpert.com that it sometimes becomes cracked with reddish tints in the cracks and the spores are dark yellowish or yellowish brown

There are actually two separate species recorded here.  My apologies for hasty work.
#1 & #2
I went back in the hopes that such a thick skinned mushroom would surely last several weeks.  It did.  Cutting into it revealed this:

#3
Hardly useful images now due to the decomposition.  This is the one that is possibly in the Scleroderma genus.  When I dug this cluster to look at the rhizomorphs I noticed an odd green/blue substance at the base.

I was also hoping to find some fresher examples to satisfy my curiosity.  ONE!
#new1
3-4mm width of outer skin. Slight purple tinge to the inner most layer of outer skin. Not noticeably scaly on the exterior, surface kind of like a russet potato.

Anyway, not really certain what these are, or even if there are actually three separate species here.  Hindsight...

You have Rhizopogon and Scleroderma.

A microscope is usually required to get them to species.

The key to Scleroderma on mushroomexpert is pretty good.  http://www.mushroomexpert.com/scleroderma.html
