puffballs
    #1817124 - 08/15/03 03:39 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

found these in the cemetery yesterday...
they are very firm and solid-feeling, unlike other puffballs i've found.
i'm wondering if it's safe to eat these guys?

if you need any more info, or pictures of them cut in half or something, let me know. thanks in advance for any help!!

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

break it in half
if it's white inside, it's edible from what ive heard of all puffballs

hmm...

the spore mass in the center is a deep lavender/violet color.

these puffballs don't match any that are in my book, but i'd really like to know if they're edible or not.  can anyone here say yay or nay based on the information and pics i've given?

i know it sounds weird, but for some reason it seems like these puffballs are telling me that i should eat them... hehe.  but i don't know if they're just trying to poison me or what!

so any help would be appreciated! thank you!

Looks like Purple Spored Puffball, Calvatia cyanthiformis, edible when the spore mass is white.

Puffballs as a group are pretty safe for eating.

You need to slice them in half vertically. The inside should be solid and white, and should not bruise to another color. You are also check to be sure that the inside is not a mushroom button, particularly an Amanita button.

You should also verify that the outer skin is thin and not tough. If it's thick (more than a millimeter or two) or tough like leather or wood, then it should not be eaten (it's probably an Earthball).

Happy mushrooming!

I'd say given from the photos (overall appearance and especially the rhizomorphic attachment to substrate), the description that the gleba is turning purple the center and that the fruitbody as a whole is "very firm... unlike other puffballs", this specimen is an earthball (Scleroderma spp.), not a puffball.
Calvatia cyathiformis has a much more pronounced sterile base than the fungus in the photo.
