puffballs identification
    #16992660 - 10/08/12 05:35 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

Hey all,

Found these puffballs today, not sure the exact species.

The one on the left was in a wood, close to an open trail, with several others around. Purple-spored puffball ?

The one on the right was in an open field, also with several others around.

Thanks !

not sure of the species, but if you cut into them and they are all white, eat em! they taste great, although a bit mild in flavor. fairly creamy, good in soups (although they soak up a ton of liquid). i just pan-fry in butter, herbs, and salt.

I can't even guess at a specific ID without more information/younger specimens/more detailed pics. Puffballs can be tricky, and those pictures are a bit nondescript.

Also why do you think they're purple spored? Am I missing something?

Most of the time yup. But be sure of what you have first.

purple spore mass? sounds a lot like an earthball...most of which are inedible

If there is a purple spore mass... That sounds like the poisonous pig puffball. I'm pretty sure you stay away from the ones with purple spores.

This.
Id be skeptical, as most puffballs that ive seen look A LOT different, but ive seen very many earthballs that look exactly like that....

it has to be pure white, no discoloration, no sludgey rot crap inside or out

big white puffballs or tiny little ones

I was referring to the purple-spored puffball mentioned here http://americanmushrooms.com/edibles3.htm (Calvatia cyathiformis), cause it looked similar. No purple spores yet though, both puffballs in the picture are pure white inside.

Thanks

glad you ate em, sorry they weren't great. i still have yet to find a way to really bring out their flavor. i actually like the smaller ones better, they have a really nice rind which contrasts so much in texture with the interior.

I sauteed them, olive oil, pinch of salt and that's it.
I tend to cook simple with mushrooms to avoid overwhelming their flavor with something else, but maybe these do deserve something else ? Garlic ? Sauteed in butter could also be better. Didnt really know how long to cook it neither, not until they're crisp right ?

Thanks !

i tried them battered and fried once, in soups the other times, the soups worked out better because they were blended, works better for the texture i think

it's always fun eating mushrooms responsibly
