Watering san pedro
    #7506927 - 10/10/07 08:27 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

I bought a san pedro cactus in February and the man at the store told me that it should be watered very infrequently in cold weather and not to start watering it until late march. I listened to him and watered more and more frequently from March on until summer and the growth on the cactus was amazing. Now summers over and it is getting cold outside I haven't watered my cactus in a month. (I watered it once every week or two weeks in the summer). How often should I water it now? I heard that water and cold temperature can cause it to grow deformed. I know it went a while without water last winter but I honestly don't know how often I should be watering it now. Any help would really be appreciated I don't want to lose my san pedro like I lost my salvia :frown:.

when cacti are dormant they only require enough water to stop them from becoming dehydrated and shrivelled up... u have to use your own judgement on this one, when your cactus starts to look dehydrated give it a little water, but not half as much as u would water during the growing season.
if the soil is wet for extended periods while the cactus is not growing, it will likely invite root rot.
