did you throw away the first bit of stuff that came through? (think its like 10-50-100 ml your sopposed to toss)

also, even thow it didn't burn, the stuff that was coming through still had lots of alcohol in it, which can be saved and "redistilled"

seeing as how that is a "pot still" i would collect all you can before the "temperature change" happens.

then run it all back through it again, and maybe even a 3rd time.

when your done with all this, it should loose alot of the garbage taste.

if you have 5 gallons of 10 percent alcohol, you should have something like 1 liter of 10%

that figuer may be well off as im doing this in my head.

but yah thats why normally you shoot for 20% alcohol in your mash to start with instead of 6%.

so next time you could have 2 liters of 10%

For some reason the first pot full i distilled worked perfectly, but now my still is pooping out wash instead of distillate. I dont know why its doing this now but the pot is filling with bubbles and its foaming into my copper tube. Ill have to figure this out.
I did some reading and i was supposed to cook the corn meal to convert the starch.

If I cook the corn meal that makes it so I dont need barley, right?

all yeast needs is sugar and nutrients to make alcohol/vodka.

also are you measuring the tempature during the distilling process? what temp you been keeping it at?

also did you strain out the corn meal and crap that was at the bottom of the carboy? or did you just pour it all into the pot and distill?

did you run water through the still before starting it back up?

p.s. also becareful with that "flame" stove top. If your not cooling it fast enough vapor will come out of your still and blow you up

and as you well know, if you spill any alcohol it will set aflame

No Im not measuring the temp. I just keep it on low flame. I will figure out a way to adapt a thermometer on there before next time.

I siphoned the liquid away from the corn meal using a vinyl hose so no the corn meal was not in the still while it was running.

I think the reason the second run caused the still to poop wash was because the white layer was in the second run, I think i should of kept the white layer separate from the wash i wanted to distill.

Anyways I didn't have any high hopes about this because i did almost everything wrong and all that so now I know exactly how to do it right. I at least got 350ml of crap my friend is going to drink. Is it safe to let him drink this? I did what I was supposed to do and i threw out the first 100ml of distillate from 2400ml wash.

Can you tell me what the cheapest and easiest way for me to make flavorless, odorless high proof spirits is?

It doesn't really need to be too easy, I grow mushrooms and make absinthe and stuff so I'm not a complete retard like this thread might portray.

easiest way is to get yourself a 5 gallon stainless steel pot or keg and
mod it into a reflux still of some kind.

basicly the idea is to cool the liquid at the top of your colum and it trickles back down, then it goes back up with heat, which forces each alcohol out one step at a time.

aka clean alcohol.

for a pot still, if you keep reruning your distilled product you will get cleaner and cleaner alcohol up to a certain point(3-4 runs)

just to be clear
in otherwords collect your alcohol, throw out the first 100ml. and collect and collect until you get a spike in your tempature....or taste it until you think your getting mostly water.

then clean your still/empty it. and add what you "distilled"

run this the same way except this time you don't have to throw the first stuff out(however i myself would throw out 5-10 ml just to be extra extra safe)

do this and it should get cleaner

lastly, buy yourself a packet of lalvin champain yeast.

make 5 gallons of water, then in that calculator find out how much sugar you need for 20%.

add "half" of this sugar, add yeast, and a nice handful of raisins, and let ferment for 4-5 days.

then open and put the rest of the sugar in, and let it go until almost all your bubbles stop(2-3 weeks).

THEN, syphon it off and distil this.....BUT collect all the sediment at the bottom and save it in a quart jar or something...or dehydrate it....aka yeast for your next batch and over time they should get smart with your recipe i would imagine.

the best you will get with pot still is 30-50 percent...most likely lower range.

oh and having the temp will help you get cleaner stuff, basicly you want to collect everything in the middle.

the first stuff is bad for your health, and the last stuff is nasty tasting if memory serves me right

Look, the main reason to cut off the "heads and tails" of the wash is a taste issue. The amount of methanol produced through fermentation is minimal and poses no danger, and the amount that you would have to drink would be offset by the ethanol poisoning. The real danger of moonshine was when back in the day people used carbeurators as a still, and back in the they, they ran on leaded fuels.

no actually ive heard it both ways, an honestly why take a chance.

methanol i believe is said to cause blindness. even today they say it right? currect me if im wrong.

their were alot of other things back in the day leading to sickness, but that doesn't mean menthol is harmless

you don't know how much a perticualar yeast is going ot make ontop of it all, one yeast might make a bunch of menthol while another slim to none.

and i believe the higher alcohols althow are extreemly small in the amount produced, are also harmful.

Sure, but the treatment for methanol poisoning is ethanol. Methanol poisoning absolutely still happens today from people making cheap hooch. Happens today in Russia and China, because they cut it with denatured alcohol.

I wanted to make a reflux still but I'm taking it one step at a time. I started with the wok still, then what I got now, ill graduate to a reflux after I learn how to ferment properly and all that.

I looked at the plans for a reflux still and it looks really complicated to make and for some reason there are no straight forward thorough explanations on how to make a reflux still. The best instructions Ive found on the web are extremely vague.

pffft thats the same sight i used to get the info on how to ferment corn meal mash.

and that ended me up with 350ml of crap you couldnt pay an alcoholic bum to drink.

well id have to see how it was worded but,

sometimes they will say, "mash" the cornmeal or w/e and that means to do what i told you earlier.  Its mostly a distilling site, not really brewing so much.

over all its a good site, lots of information their, check their forums they have lots of designs in their, one of them thats pretty neat is called the shotgun condenser.

edit: and i thought you said your uncle gave you the recipe :tongue2:

Bread yeast I hear populations plumit at 5% causing fermentation to drag out as the yeast evolves into a strain capable of higher alcohol tolerance. Sounds like the pressure is causing mash to go up into your collecting tube, you need a taller pot or smaller mash loads or wider collecting tube. The collector should be spiraled so the steam condenses and increases your yield. Old timers sometimes filtered their moonshine by cutting the ends of an old home baked loaf of bread and straining the alcohol through the bread loaf. That step has been replaced by charcoal filtering. I got a pack of dog water filters that screwed into a 2 liter bottle into an automatic water bowl. I just got the replacement filters and attached them to 2-2liter bottles that drain like an hour glass into each other.

Fig brandy smells like candy from a distance but is undrinkable because the sugar content in the fruit makes the alcohol industrial strength. So too much sugar in the mash is worse than too little IME.

Since we`re on the subject of oldskool moonshine recipes
How to make applejack brandy without distilling:

First make some applejack. Mash some apples obtain the juice, add brown sugar sterilize and ferment. Now take your applejack and put it oustide in the winter in a bucket. The water will freeze and the alcohol will be forced out of the ice and remain a liquid. Now remove the ice leaving all the liquids. Keep doing that until no more ice forms and it will be too high of alcohol percentage to drink e.g. pure alcohol.

from the "stuck ferments" part of that link you posted.

Quote:
You can still distill a wash which hasn't fully fermented out, but be prepared for some fun. It is likely to foam up heaps, and possibly block the column if you don't give it enough headspace, or use the "anti-foaming" silicon emulsions (wash conditioner) available in brewshops. Also, because not all the sugar has fermented, you're likely to get less alcohol out, and you may caramelise a bit of it on the element or the base of the pot (clean it well afterwards).

I got the recipe from my uncle but he didnt really go into too much detail on what I was supposed to do with it.

Hopefully next time when i do it right it will taste decent because the way this stuff smelled was bad.

Im going to look into the shotgun condenser.
