Re: Why do I want to grow mycelium on Agar??

Just like Camel said, it's the only way to go if you want real control and quality. This is why it's the only method you read about in books, it's the only one for really decent results. Sure a mass innoculation works, but you have no idea what strain you are dealing with and what it's properties are. Also as camel said, the expansion is unparalleled. I suggest you pick up a copy of The Mushroom Cultivator and then you'll see the benefits.

Here are some reasons:

1) Quicker colonization
2) No need to wait for spores to germ
3) Less contams in jars
4) with whole grain you can do grain to grain transfers (expand to 1000 jars from 10 jars initially)
5) clone
6) if petri contams, transfer mycelium on contam'd petri to new petri (NO CONTAMS!)
7) 1 petri inoc's 4 quart jars (each quart can inoc 10 gallons/half gallons EACH)
8) CLONE!
9) preserve original strains
10) isolate substrains
11) SO EASY
12) You will feel like a mad scientist

Honestly though. Moving to agar was the best decision I have made to take my growing to the next level. My projects now take on unsurpassed yields, and I have complete control over the amount of mushrooms i would like and how often they pop up.

peace

PM me with any cultivation questions.

I just looked at my profile and realized I had a website at one point in time on geocities, it's not there anymore and I have no idea what I had on it. Anybody remember my website from several years aga? PM if so please.

OK..... So I guess its time for that next step... One more question... can I still use 1/2 pint jars and innoculate them with the mycelium grown on the agar or do I have to do a classical method and cut slices of the colonized Agar and put them into the jars? Can I put the agar with some sterilized water into a blender and then innoculate the liquid into the jars... Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question but Ive been doing the easy old PF for too long now and I kinda got stuck on its easy operation.
