When Contamination Strikes!
    #736368 - 07/10/02 09:51 AM (22 years, 5 months ago)

I have two small fruiting chambers with perlite humidification. I usually fruit a maximum of four cakes in each terrarium at a time but they could hold six, packed, with little room to fruit. Well, I lost four cakes to one of the terrariums today. Peices of cake on the wet perlite were over-run by green and two cakes were showing damage. I isolated the terrarium from my fruiting room, which happens to be my bed-room, and emptied it into a garbage bag which was directly taken outside to the garbage pale. Next, the fruiting chamber and anything inside it was cleaned with a 10% bleach and left to air dry. The fruiting room was vacumed, lysol sprayed in the air, and any working surfaces sprayed and whiped with a 10% bleach solution. I will then put fresh perlite into the clean terrarium with plenty of H202. I figure I might as well clean up good now than ruin the rest of my work in the future. It took all but 20 minutes and i'm happy with the job. I feel my working areas are one step closer to being sterile.

I hear that using peroxide to whipe down surfaces is better than a diluded bleach solutions. Also peroxide doesn't have a nasty smell like bleach....

The greens a bitch,

Bleach is one of the best disinfectents. A 10% solution will only smell if you rub your nose all up in it. I whipe the surfaces and then let it air dry. Seems to work very good.
