Hi, I will be inoculating tomorrow so I need as much information as I can get right now. Will I need lysol? or can I just use rubbing alcohol to wipe everything down and take a shower and wear clean cloths etc. and inoc. using a syringe into 4 holes in the lids with a layer of tin-foil underneath and on top I boiled the jars for 1.5 hours in a pot and added water during the boiling process steam was constantly escaping the lid is this ok? or is the steam supposed to be help in during the entire process? Thanks any information will be appriciated

Thanks KuSsH you have replied to almost all of my posts on this board. Do you really need to wipe every time you squirt 1\4 mL of spore solution into each hole? And would it be ok if I let my jars sit after boiling them for more than a day like 2-3 days? Also would it be just as effective to use rubbing alcohol or hydrogren peroxide instead of bleach or is bleach better? What should I wipe with bleach? working area? syringe? jars? And last of all the bleach will not harm anything in the jar even if the needle is inside of it with wet bleach still on it?

Bleach with paper towel? Alcohol evaporates and leaves water, so no need to wipe.

Get gloves at Cosco or Sams or Price Club... 2 Boxes of 100 (that's 100 total pairs for the geniuses) for under $10. Or get small zip loc baggies in bulk, and use those as ghetto gloves.

if your at the point of knocking up your jars and your not exposing the grain to the air, what is the point in being so clean now all you have to do is shoot those jars up.am i missing something here.hygene is important in ones life but i think to be that clean just shoot up jars is just the wroug time to worry about it. i would just make sure that needle is clean and blast your load in them jars good luck man.

I wasn't reading the top of the post... my friend uses gloves (ghetto or not) when handling cakes in a terrarium, for harvesting, etc. When innoculating, he never uses anything, since he is only touching thing like syringes and jars. But this might not be considered the safest way.

I would not bother with wiping post flaming the syringe to red hot. You killed _everything_ flaming the needle, wiping it just reintroduces chance of contamination.

but what is the point? I could see some poor new guy flaming and alcoholing his needle until the metal is worn down... I don't think that using alcohol on the needle post flaming is required. I do agree that it probably won't introduce any new contams, but you think it's required?

K , thx kukusz, but I still have a few questions that I hope can be answered, would it be ok to use a freezer? ( the long big ass kind that sits on the floor) and if I were to do it this way, I would probably keep submerged for 6-12 hours. Also the method that says you put the cakes in jars and submerge in water, would you be able to just use the jar they are colonizing in? Just say Im about to birth my cakes I fill the jars they are sitting in with cold water refridgerate or put somewhere cool ( my friend has AC and his room is in basement should be cool enough) and just let them sit than when they are ready to be birthed I just take them out as I empty the water? And another question these cakes would float if nothing was holding them down am I correct?

I would not freeze them, very bad. 6 hours with that little water and they will be ice-cubes. Yes, just use your jars that they are colonizing in. Putting them in a cool place other than fridge will work just fine. 24 hours.... Yes they would float, put the lid on And yes, just dump the water out of the jar (using the lid to keep the cake from ending up in your garbage disposal) and stick in fruiting chamber. Do not bother wiping the cake dry like some suggest, it will evaporate in like 30 minutes.

personally I'd recommend using an inoculation hood that I detail making in the post here http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=Forum2&Number=1627128&fpart=&PHPSESSID=
I guarantee you if you use this, you will slice your contam rate down DRASTICALLY, or I give you a 100% cash refund!

KusSH would you recommend I wait to get lysol before innoculation or just procede with bleach and flaming the syringe.

I need to find out what the ratio for injecting peroxide into honey water spawn. would you use 1-2cc straight into 1 pint or like 5cc of a 1:9 mix???
any advice would be greatly appreciated ps. the H202 kills spores.. right, but does it also kill growing contams?

thanks, What i meant was a growing culture in honeywater, which might be at risk for contamination. adding peroxide to that ....
so the primary use would be to protect your mushies when fruiting - by adding it to a cool mist humidifier or similar setup right?

I've been using those new Chorlox bleach towelettes that come in a roll in a despenser so I don't spread the germs around with a dirty rag. I wipe down once, throw away towelette and wipe a second with another, then spray with 91% ISA. Love those towelletes!
