The spezialisation of the brain hemispheres exist, but of course they are connected and synchronised by the fastest nerve-fibres we know.
We can 'use' this spezialisation to some extend if we realise it.
If we don't realise it, some of these specialisations may 'overtake' parts of the 'whole' individum which will look like 'left-' or 'right-'brainer then.

Everyone uses specialized parts of their brain all the time. The visual cortex is a specialized part of the brain, and you're using it right now.

Then they would have a crippling brain pathology.

Healthy people do not have more density on one side of the brain than the other. It's amazing how these myths persist even though I've linked research ^^^ up there that says this is not so.

It is true that different parts of the brain develop differently in different people. Musicians have developments that are different than that of an athlete. This has nothing whatever to do with the myth that some people are left-brained and others are right-brained.

As for the 10% of our brain thing, I think if there's any validity to this at all then all it basically means is "10% of our brain mass is actually receptors, and communicating nerves, while the rest is connective tissue

But you know enough to make up unsubstantiated facts even though neurologists who spend their entire life studying this disagree with you. :rolleyes:

Where did I say that?

The brain is not homogeneous. Different parts do different things. A particular function may not occur exactly 50/50 but the brain is a unified whole and functions as a unit.

So yes, the detection of a sine wave at exactly 500 Hz in the left ear only at one specific sound pressure level may be a function of one small part of the brain in one hemisphere, but that's an idealized laboratory abstraction.

The detection and appreciation of music consisting of many tones of many characters in both ears involves sweeping regions of the brain that perceive, decode, understand, and respond emotionally to the sounds as one unified whole.

So a musician's brain is obviously different from an athletes generally speaking, this we both seem to agree on.

This doesn't make one left-brained and the other right-brained. The abilities that make for a great musician are distributed on both sides of the brain. Same for an athlete.

Let's get clear on what we're discussing here:

I agree that musicians develop certain neural pathways differently than mathematicians, for example. This is no different than a body builder exercising certain muscles causing them to bulk up. That doesn't make the body builder top-bodied or bottom-bodied. He is one-bodied.

What IS A MYTH is that a musician decides to study music BECAUSE he was born right-brained. It is also A MYTH that a mathematician decides to study math because he was born left-brained.

Both musical artistic ability and logical abstract reasoning abilities are distributed in BOTH hemispheres.

Which paraphrases what I've been saying. Speech comprehension occurs with the appreciation of the sound of the words in one hemisphere and its reduction into syntactically meaningful information in the other hemisphere. It is not a right or left function. It is an integrated whole-brain function.
