Tone, not content...
    #1824216 - 08/17/03 10:59 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

The general "tone" of a post has been brought up on several occassions. If 9 out of 10 people detect no "tone" is the 10th person paranoiac or just more sensitive to tonal qualities than the rest? What ever happened to content?

Hypothetical 1: Lousy tone

NASA Inspector: Well, some joker fucked up! There is a cracked ceramic tile on the space shuttle.

NASA Supervisor: Son, I am ignoring your report because I do NOT like your disrespectful tone.

*Space shuttle Challenger blows up a month later on re-entry due to faulty tile.*

Hypothetical 2: Sweet tone

Director: Of course I can get you a part in my next movie, honey. You are a natural talent with great beauty. Now come over here and sit beside me.

Starlet: Really? My first role? I can hardly believe it. *snuggles up to director*

Hypothetical 3: Abrasive tone

Neighbor 1: *pounds obnoxiously on door at 3AM* Get your fat ass up! There is a fire! We must get out NOW!

Neighbor 2: I am going nowhere, you woke me out of a deep sleep you insulting bastard.

I don't get it.  Perhaps I'm tone deaf.

hmm.  i think you think up hypothetical situations too much

tone of voice & nonverbal communication = k3y.

words only = 7% of language.

makes communicating via the internet a bit difficult sometimes.

Namaste.

Internet communication: words (content) = 100%; anything beyond that is in the imagination of the reader.

I think what he means is that people are ignoring what he has to say, and only seeing their reactions, before seeing what swami really has to say. (i.e. defending ones self before the story can be fully told, or takin harsh opposition with listening to what one has to say). im not trying to speak for swami... but thats what seems to be my interpretation.

Words only 7%?!
Then why did "talkie" movies quickly surpass silent films in popularity (there are more words in talkies)?
Why are there so many bookstores and so few people in public spaces?

Sclorch no compute.

Please note that I have amended and changed the previous post.

The other analogy was shitty.

Being on the internet, though, there's not much more than smileys and formatting to convey tone, so here especially words count for most of the message that is conveyed.

This is a shitty excuse for miscommunication.

It tells me that a person is relying too much on periphery communication and not enough on the actual words coming out. This is a comprehension and observation problem. It IS, however, easily mended. But it must first be recognized. There could also be an issue of articulation. This is harder to mend, but it is still fixable.

Patience... patience... this is not life or death.

Well, it depends on the situation.  If you are talking to a close friend, you are going to be much more informal about what you are saying and the way you word things.  But if you are talking to a person on a bulletin board with whom you have never communicated, you may want to articulate your thoughts more clearly, and to keep in mind that they may misunderstand your words so you should be sure to not use too much sarcasm or hyperbole so they won't think you're being a condesceding ass to them.  Of course, this is easily mended like you said, and it is done so by everyone having a nondefensive attitude and being willing to get along instead of argue.

I guess I said pretty much what you said.

Shouldn't BOTH tone AND content be k3y?

Insert an "I think" mentally in front of eveything I say that seems sketchy, because I certainly don't KNOW much. Also; feel free to yell at me.

It depends on the medium.

This one is content-driven... as such, we make the necessary adjustments.
