Bullshit, I say. Who made the lesson? For what possible reason?

Everything in life just is. Just experience everything as it unfolds - don't try to squeeze it into the past, don't make it part of the test. 'Ah, this must be a lesson, to see how much I've grown between then and now, because there is such and such similarity between what's happening now and something I experienced three years ago.' No.

If you look at everything as a lesson then you'll have a big pile of passes and fails and nothing more. Human beings are not lessons. Life is not a lesson. Why grade yourself?

I think that this perspective that you are critiquing is more in terms of interpreting reality as it occurs as an opportunity for evolution, and I think that, in these terms, it is a skillful manner of interpretation. Interpreting events and actions and thoughts in this manner brings one to change, which subsequently changes what is, as one subsequently interacts with reality in different manners. Life itself might not exist as a lesson, yet clearly learning from life is preferable. :yesnod:

If you learn from your experiences then you can better yourself as a person.

Yeah, I guess it's a matter of degree.
One day I might learn how to be a little more open and loving. But then I try to take the event that lead to me being more open and loving, and dissect it in terms of past events - or give it a larger spiritual context. Then it falls apart and there is a separation between myself and my current experience.

Not necessarily.
One can learn destructive things instead of things that would help for personal growth.
Becoming "a better person" is relative but in my opinion means freeing one self, the path of self knowledge.
They are still "life lessons".
It all depends on what you wanna understand by learning.
This doesn't happen in all cases and people can say (and it is true) that they learned their lessons from an experience. Only that they become cynics or fearful.

I don't agree with all of this. I do think that most likely life just is. So from there I can use the experiences for my benefit by learning from them. (lessons) Lessons don't have to be pass/fail. I went to a college that did not have grades at all and I learned a lot there.

Sure, maybe life events aren't truly lessons. But a person can take each event, positive or negative, and learn from them, in order to better themselves. I believe this is what is being referred to as the Guru (note the capitol G). "My guru led me to the Guru". Then the teachings abound. It's all in the perspective and having the intellectual capacity and willingness to constantly challenge and be mindful of "potential" lessons to be learned. They are only lessons once you let them be.

It's in our nature to find the similarities between things, and human nature in particular to find the similarities between events spaced far apart in time. Comparing something with what happened to you before and using that to predict the future is the essence of what intelligence is.
