Do you think the brain has access to other dimensions?
    #7314199 -

I've been thinking it has to, lately. The world of our brain is SO wildly different than anything in this three dimensional material universe that it is astounding and greatly perplexing. Ancient religions like Buddhism and Taoism believed there were too, in language that was less scientific. Furthermore, the brain as an organ is almost downright creepy. If you look at a brain, it looks nothing like any other organ, and unlike every other organ, it cannot be well understood just by observation. It looks so alien. And we know almost nothing about it.

I am an atheist, but I believe that the brain must have access to other dimensions. Not only that, but I believe we have other senses outside of sight, hearing, etc in these dimensions. Perhaps the senses are less obvious because they aren't our three dimensional "environment building" senses, but I think we've all at times have had feelings that we could sense "vibes" or "energies" from other people, and I believe they actually exist.

Sorry if that made no sense. What do you guys think?

No.

If you look at a brain, it looks nothing like any other organ

The liver doesn't look like any of your organs, either. Actually none of your organs looks like your other organs, to the trained eye.

We know almost nothing about the brain.

That's not true. We have an enormous amount of data regarding the brain...we just don't have an all-encompassing theory of how it all works together. We know a lot about the parts of the brain. We are discovering new things about the brain (and the human brain in particular) almost every day.

It is definitely the most complex thing we know of in the universe...but it isn't magical or other-worldly.

I explained what I meant by "looks nothing like any other organ." Scientists hundreds of years ago could overall pin how the liver worked and whatnot. We've had the torso organs down for a long, long time - even the Romans figured some of it out. But the brain is still far too complicated for us to understand even "well." We just understand what parts of the brain are electrically active given a certain stimilus, and not much more.

And we still know almost nothing about the brain. Like much of science, much of it is a theoretical guess that could be wrong. Living in an era of great discovery, we have the false belief that all our science is right. Many of our basic beliefs about the universe will be proven wrong with time (and have been proven wrong over the past decades). But the consciousness especially - which is of course the most complicated aspect of the most complicated thing in the universe - we know nothing about.

Simply the ability to make abstract conclusions (for example regarding history or future) is a step into another dimenson.
So, yes. For sure.
How far it will go depends on the definition of 'dimension'.

Scientists hundreds of years ago could overall pin how the liver worked and whatnot.

Not exactly. They couldn't have known about enzymes and how DNA works with proteins to accomplish the various functions of the liver. They might have known in general what the liver does (production of bile is the only large-scale process they could see in the liver) but they couldn't have known the details.

We just understand what parts of the brain are electrically active given a certain stimilus, and not much more.

That just isn't true. Take a look at anything done in neuroscience for even just the last 10 years.

But I'm not here to argue with you on this. If you think we "know nothing" about the brain...that's fine and dandy. You just go right on believing what you want.

Sorry, but every test to validate any sort of 'vibes' or extra senses has failed every time. Your belief has no effect on their (non)existence.

I want to believe what is right. If we have made some gigantic discoveries of how the brain works in the past 10 years, I'd appreciate it if you would let me know. I don't ignore facts just to believe what I'd like; my beliefs are constantly changing.

We are not that scientifically advanced of a civilization yet in the slightest bit. We still, for the most part, are dependent upon burning fuel, something that will probably be looked back upon as extremely, extremely low-tech. It is likely my feelings will be proven wrong with time, but it is also likely that we will realize the importance of other dimensions in our every day lives. Many physicists and others believe there must be dimensions outside the three we live in, and just because we haven't discovered them it is foolish to believe they don't exist, especially considering how hard it is to discover or solve things on an atomic or subatomic level.

While I agree that the human brain is unique and amazing, I do not see how these qualities necessarily add up to the ability to access other dimensions.  Our immune system is also unique and amazing, with capacities we do not yet understand, but this does not mean that we could use our immune system to access other dimensions.

Why have you made this connection?  I'm not sure that I understand the logic of connecting our incomplete information about the brain & the existence of/ability to access other dimensions.

"What is foolish is to believe they do exist with no evidence."

I disagree. Much of what we believe today, especially about the cosmos, is purely theoretical and simply fills mathematical holes. There is no real evidence for it besides the fact it fills holes based on theories that may or may not even be correct. Furthermore, like I said, many scientists do believe there must be more than three spatial dimensions. It's not like I have a very complicated belief system that is foolish to believe in a la Christianity. I just believe in other spatial dimensions, and the possibility that the complexity of the brain compared to all other nature might demand the use of another dimension. I don't believe in it, but I certainly believe in the possibility.

In our brains, ware basing our worldview off light, sound waves, chemicals, etc. The world we see already isn't the "real world," especially because our interpretations of light and sound waves (color, sound) are complete illusions that do not exist. If you believe solely in them, you are just as foolish. Our brain says "Our hand is hard and solid, and the table is hard and solid, thus they stop eachother." Not so. Your hand is 99% empty space, made up of atoms that are also 99% empty space. Any interpretation of anything by our five senses is inherently a (mostly false) representation of reality that helped us evolve and procreate.

And as to how I reached the conclusion... it's hard to say. I have read a vast amount of related material, in both school here at UW-Madison and in my free time. I certainly do not believe strongly in this extradimensional brain, and would immediately say "okay" if evidence suggested otherwise, which none has done yet. My beliefs are also certainly not stoner philosophy. I used to - like a few months ago - believe strongly in just this dimension, atoms, determinism, and so on. Meditation has changed my mind. Even if you think that is just "mystical bullshit" or however current society treats meditation, the things I have felt- with no drugs but just meditation - speak for themselves to me.

The extradimensional brain is far less important to my belief system than the interconnectedness of all things and others. If you will only believe what "science" tells you is right in Discover, Newsweek, or some other easily digestible news material since you certainly don't actually seek it out, then you are a tool, especially because much of what science has said gets continually proven wrong. I am not proposing that the sun revolves around the Earth or that the electromagnetic force does not exist. All I am saying is that current science and research in quantum physics greatly supports the existence of other spatial dimensions, and it is not unreasonable to believe or at least suppose that aspects of our material universe reach into these dimensions.

Really, start with the all too common fact that we can clearly, but only subjectively regard future and past as 'this' as what we experience it. Then be aware that this conception is completely in our mind.
This 'awareness' is seemingly quite limited ín our living plant and animal relatives !
If we can't realize our possibilities to enter future and past as a multidimensional awareness-function of transition, we will be stuck in other parts and reigns of imaginable reality as well. Locked from spirituality.

And Trendal, you really like starting condescending bash fests, don't you.

Evidencing my former (and probably still existent) determinism as well, remember when you got your ass kicked in this thread?

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/6804451/page/0/fpart/1/vc/1

Also, I like what BlueCoyote said. Past/Future is indeed incredibly interesting. 18 years ago, I was standing outside my elementary school, maybe a shade over 4 feeet tall. Now that is utterly nonexistent, and now I am sitting in my apartment several hours away. Another twenty years and I'll be dead or driving my kid home from something. Time is messed up.

Edit: Sorry again, Trendal. Looks like I got you confused with Phred in that thread.

Much of what we believe today, especially about the cosmos, is purely theoretical and simply fills mathematical holes.

You can never "know" that the world is a certain way. It's impossible, because it's always possible it's all some elaborate ruse...you could be a brain in a vat being "fed" information about the world around you!

That being said...

There is no real evidence for it besides the fact it fills holes based on theories that may or may not even be correct.

On the contrary, there is loads of data backing up the currently accepted view of reality. If there really was no evidence for it...it wouldn't be the accepted view. What we know has come from centuries of discoveries, and countless times when the then-accepted view of reality conflicted with what was seen in experiment.

We can't say we are correct 100% now...but we never will be able to say with 100% certainty that we know how things work. Not going to happen. It isn't even a goal of science.

I just believe in other spatial dimensions

The existence of extra spatial dimensions has no evidence whatsoever for it. It's one of those things you were talking about earlier - with no evidence and only theory to say they even exist. Some physicists buy into the idea...some don't...but most will wait until we have some real experimental evidence for extra dimensions.

Well now you have to be careful here...are you talking about reality at the scale of atoms? Or are you talking about our macroscopic world?

The quantum world sure is crazy! If quantum effects still made a difference in our scale...the world would be a very strange place!

Luckily for us, quantum scale effects don't have a great effect on our world because we are made of such a mind bogglingly large number of individual atoms. We're actually lucky that this is the case with our universe...because not only do we get rid of quantum interactions by assembling such large quantities of matter, we also get other new Laws that come into effect. This is the thing that is responsible for life emerging in our universe.

Nevermind that, I didn't read your longass reply. It wasn't that charged or provocative like you rothers.

Quantum tendencies absolutely do make a difference at the macroscopic level, which is of course made up of the very tiny. Single quantum effects certainly do not, but what happens on the quantum level certainly does.

And there have been a variety of experiments done to probe the existence of extra spatial dimensions. They sound kind of sketchy, though. It is indeed a mostly mathematical idea at this point, though, but it is getting more converts. Some of our science is indeed very certain, especially with things like biology. But when it gets to the quantum level or the cosmos, we know very little and almost everything is theory.

Trendal, this is about what I believe or suppose. This was not a fucking debate topic, especially to the level of debate you have taken it. This is the second time you've done this to one of my topics, and in the last one you got your ass leveled by several posters. This is obviously indicative of yourself antisocial nature.

Easy there man, no need to pull out the ad hominem...

I don't remember getting my "ass leveled" in that thread. I had a disagreement with some of the posters, but it was nothing more.

Further, if you don't want your threads to be debated, there is a forum for that sort of thing: MR&P. As long as you continue to post in the philosophy forum, you should be prepared to debate what you write.
