I think this is an excellent idea!
From my side: 1) I found perlite to be a pain in the ass. When it's wet it sticks to everything. I now use bubbler stones, much cleaner but a little noisy.
2) Grain is so easy to use. I started out doing PF style jars. It's time consuming compared to grain and you have less to work with. If you're going to case I'd say go with grain.
Hopefully other more experienced growers will have something more to add.

Mistakes are part of the hobby. Everyone learns from mistakes making you smarter and better at it. If you knew everything..you wouldn't need to post anything. Trial and error is the key. You'll develop a better understanding of everything this way and always have success

How important following directions are, not to experiment till the proven teks are mastered, that patience is what causes mushrooms to grow, that steriltiy is the only way mushrooms are going to have a chance, not to waste supplies on stupid ideas till one has enough experience to come up with viable ideas to start with, that dung will grow more mushrooms with less work, that living next to a mushroom cultivator would be nice............................................. this could go on for pages so I'll stop now.

I wish I'd known...
1. ...that thrift stores rock! They have lots of cheap supplies like pressure cookers, cool mist humidifiers, rubbermaid storage containers, fish tank heaters, heating pads, etc..
2. ...that you should not remove jars from the PC immediately after cooking, because as they cool they suck in air. And if they are left to cool overnight inside the PC, the air they suck in will be sterile.
3. ....that perlite is a mess and, at least for me, only got RH up to 88%. Invest in a Vicks/Kaz cool mist humidifier especially if you can find one for $2 at a thrift store! Thrift stores rock!
4. ...that building a glove box is a worthwhile investment to avoiding contams.

Well the biggest thing i have found helpful is to clean and sterilize the Kitchen(or other room you will be working in) 2 days before. then to use lysol al over for the next 2 days clean it again then prepare every thing. Also I found it helpful to make an extra jar or 2 jsut to try caseing or another idea you may have. That way you will know what to do the next time. Plus you don;t put all your eggs in 1 basket Pick a TEK and follow it to the letter. L3D

I learned how very very important it was to follow procedure when sterilizing. That was the hardest part for me, avoiding contams

perlite worked really well for my friend and he wasted money on the cool mist....only got his grow box up to 60%rh where as the perlite is simple and easy, did you strain water through it? the most messy part to my friend is the verm, plus he litterly had to buy a bag that is the same size as himself....it was almost 6 ft long and it had more girth. this is why trial and error is needed cause what works for someone else will ruin all of someone elses jars. details, details, details.....some times my friend starts getting an adrenaline rush when he is making stuff that he skips over some shit...damn adrenaline junkie. if i could have told my friend about the double ended method i beleive it would have saved 6 jars and let the rest fully collied.

I wish I would have used a cool mist humidifier from the beginning instead of perlite.
I wish I had know about the oven tek sooner. Forget about lysol.
I wish I had know about growing with poo.
I never bought a kit or a pod or anything like that and I'm glad I never did.

Perlite rocks Casings rock be very careful you keep your casing soil moist and fluffy too much water in substrate or casing will ruin everything get a good measuring cup rye grain rocks be sure to shake rye grain after it is pressure cooked and berfore it cools jars must breathe well filter disks rock polyfil sucks steralise all casing soil well and perlite and basically everything get a pressure cooker, not neccassarily a pressure canner only use widely approved and respected teks when starting out don't case in clear containers put your colonising jars somewhere warm, in a container and don't check on em more than every 3-4 days. Checking on em a few times a day increases the risk of contamination big time that's about all I can think of right now, but finally don't expect huge amounts of shrooms when starting out

I wish I would have read more, took a lot more notes, and stuck with store bought mushies untill I learned what the hell I was doing. (spending money on a bunch of syringes that you never get any shrooms from isn't all that fun)
Oh, and that whole thrift store thing too...I can't believe I never thought of that.
