$350 to start growing, need some figures

Well, i have 350 bucks saved up to start my mushroom cultivation. I want to grow as much possible within the confines of my bedroom/closet. I have absolutely no equipment to start with, and have to buy spores. Do you think i could start out growing a good amount of shrooms with that amount of money? Thanks for any insight

350 is more than enough. First have you cultivated mushroom before? If not I would say don?t get ahead of yourself. Successful cultivation requires allot of patience. With patience and proper teks you can be very successful. I would say 350 is more than enough in fact 75 should be adequate.

Yeah, thats plenty. Just dont get too far in over your head otherwise you'll end up doing something wrong and loosing your money.
Start off small and get things going right so that you can feel things out first.
If you feel confident you can start off with some small casings using the PF tek.
I think the first thing you need to buy are: 1) A nice sized pressure cooker (you'll use this a lot!) 2) 1/2 pint and pint jars ($8.99/case of 12) 3) Spore print/syringe 4) Incubator: Large igloo cooler, glass jug, aquarium heater

A pressure cooker is the only expensive thing you will ever need to buy. Everything else is pocket change.
1. pressure cooker $100 new (used ones are much cheaper) 2. jars $12 3. rubbermaids $5-20 4. cool mist or pmp setup <$25 5. Vermiculite $6 6. Perlite $8 7. spore syringe $18 8. Fish Tank heater $20 9. Other stuff: alcohol, dust masks, tape, foil, polyfill, lysol, spray bottle, plastic wrap, damp-rid, etc. <$40
At the most, you could spend 250 bucks, but realistically I'd say many people get by spending less than 150. But the most essential things you need to grow a good crop are time and knowledge. Better start researching before you even think about pulling that money out of your pocket.

I'm in for about 100 bucks including a syringe for 25 bucks. I don't have a pressure cooker. I use the steam method for 2 hours.
Good luck this is a fun hobby and patience is what you will need most of.

THat's how I started
actually I already had a very good vegetable steamer, so in fact I only spent probably 50 bucks.
For the poster: It sounds like you're very eager to start cultivation, good for you but remember that you will need A LOT of patience, be prepared to encounter failures or mishaps. You need to be maticulous in this hobby, also, since you're in the spending mood look into making a decent glovebox (or buy one!) This will definitely help.
good luck!

Buy the best possible pressure cooker you can. You will thank yourself later when you buy a high quality cooker. Most people who attempt to grow never get past the all important step of sterilization.

Good idea... you may as well invest in an agar kit too... this sounds like one of the more fun parts of mycology.
Also, since you have the cash, a glove box wouldn't hurt.

I started for like $15, all I needed was verm, perlite, brf, and jars. I already had a pressure cooker a few wild prints, I made a pmp out of stuff laying around the house, got some plexiglass from work, happened to find a aquarium pump in my garage (we never had fish so I don't know where the hell it came from) and got tons of jars at a flea market for next to nothing. Everything else I already had. $350 would be enough for me to grow for years.

ive always used my gas oven for 2 hours and 15 mins @ 250 for quart jars... out of probably 100 quats ive had 2 contams... much easier to do like 30 jars at a time in the oven than pressure cooking all day

I spent 50$ my first time, than I sold a qtr. and made my money back, and still had a lot left....you don't need to spend more that 70-80$ unless you REALLY want to produce.

how did you get 50 bucks back by selling a quarter? the first time i grew, i sold a few quarters for 20 a piece to make my money back. but since then i have not sold a sigle shroom. i know a few people that i give freebies to, but i would never sell shrooms unless i needed to cover some expenses from growing them to start with.

Wow... I did a lot of research last night on growing, and feel fairly confident. I am putting my order in for the highest quality pressure cooker i can find, and buying a book. Anybody wanna recommend a great spore (and where to buy it)? I plan on making 24 cakes for my first time. Again, thanks a lot for replying guys. PEACE

Since this thread seems to be the good place to ask, how many $$$ did you guys spend so far for mushroom cultivation?
After reading this post, i took a couple minutes to calculate myself and was astonished by the total ... am I the only one to have spent more than 350$ so far, including everything? hahaha.
Something is sure, you're in business with 50$, no doubt about it...

First, if you plan making 24 cakes as your first time, you don't need a pressure cooker. Don't buy a PC right now until you *really* feel the need for it, when you go with grains. Second, there's no need for a book if you go with the PF-tek. To be honnest, there's enough information on shroomery.org for everything (pf-tek, casings, grains, bulk, agar, etc.)
Finally, instead of buying a pressure cooker, invest 40$ for a good terrarium with an automated setup (air pump, geolite, rubbermaid and timer). You will be able to grow amazing cakes and casing with a terrarium like that.

Fish speaks truth. Also, you should look into www.Mycobag.com since you've got the cash. Growing in bags lets you watch the growth a little safer than you can in a jar. It is a great way to learn the basic life cycle of mycelia. You can start jars at the same time too. Bags are easier to look at wothout risking contamination. I highly suggest noobs try them.

Geez I wish it was that in-expensive for me as it was for yall.
Verm- $30 dollars for the only bag in San Antonio Perlite - $10 dollars 10 1/2 pint jars- $3 dollars a piece so $30 dollars. Had to buy at the container store. No other store sold them without shoulders. 4 Quart jars (2nd grow now)- $7 a piece, so $30 dollars.Same deal on availability. Pressure cooker- $80 dollars for a measly 6 qt. Gypsum- $8 dollars, not bad. WBS- $10 dollars, not bad. Rubbermaids- $20 dollars for decent sized ones. Aquarium heater- $12 dollars. A steal there at least. Syringes- Ecuador and Hawaiians at $20 a pop from sporebank.
So all in all first grow cost me $270 dollars. I called every possible store that sold these goods, even illogical ones before I had to suck it up and by the only ones I could find. It's not like there was a lack of trying to find cheaper ones. I guess It's just the price you pay for living in San Antonio.

Great advice from the guys a few posts above ... I'm the cheapest one here and I will say geolite is one of the best investments I've made.
Let me add, you can buy the empty bags with the air exchange & injector port and fill them yourself for a fraction of the cost if you have a pressure cooker ... and a cheap one will do. If you plan on producing a lot of shrooms this is a good way to turn out quantity spawn. The self healing port is worth it if you plan on reusing the bags.
damn, jared that really sucks... Look into bags as an alternative to jars, try and find the cheapest local materials shrooms will fruit on. Can you get a good deal on straw & poo?

So far, i ordered a really big pressure cooker, 2 spore syringes that i got for free, perlite, and vermiculate. Might get experienced friend to help grow not using the cake method. He says it has a much higher yield of shrooms. Peace

spores from fsrc: $1 vermiculite: $3 perlite: $3 isopropynol: $3 10 Ball/BerNARdin "freezer jars" (any plastic works as long as it has 5 in the underside triangle): $7 Total cost for first grow op: $17. Everything else I has EASY acess to, and $10 says if you have 2 friends who would let you poke around their house for an hour in return for a promise of a fat sack of schroomadooms you would have a de-fuckin-lux set up. Just ask em if they ever used to have fish. If so, you'll find aquariums, heaters (maybe), bubblers, maybe a thermometer, pretty much anything you need on the side if enclosed controlled environments, everyone I know seems to have all this crap waiting to be thrown away (or taken by me) in their garage or some closet. Just buy the rest of the substrate crap, and your growin. Save that extra $333, buy some good bud and a new bong. that will keep you busy till the mushies are done. Danny Boy

I've invested about $400 by purchasing the following. 23qt pressure cooker $100 - this is esentially if you don't want to be dissapointed by high contam rates 15 spore syringes $120 Mycosupply $100 (bought some stuff for my 50/50+casing layer, oyster shell and lime as well as some filter tops for widemouth jars, but those are for future WBS colonizations) Then of course you need your BRF, vermiculite, perlite, peat, jars, rubbermaid tubs etc... BRF can be found at wholefoods. Everything else at OSH, ACE or Homedepot. $350 is a good initial investment that will get you everything you need to grow a LOT of shrooms.
