On the mjshroomer situation. . .
    #7277243 -

Just an idea, but perhaps from now on to stave off anymore problems with people like him who like to share their personal/private info (such as name, photographs, location and activities) and then threaten to sue for what may be said about them in an anonymous drug related forum.

Perhaps an addendum to the user agreement that is signed before one can create an account is in order. Something to the nature of a liability clause that basically means that in order to post here you forfeit your right to press charges against anyone here, or the admin/staff, for anything said about you should you choose to openly break your anonymity. This should go for photoshops as well, considering the fact that nobody is forced to post pictures of themself on an anonymous drug forum. If you choose to do so, that should be at your own risk.. it is the internet, I don't think it should be the Admin or mods responsibility to shelter people from the backlash of their own actions.

In the case of mjshroomer, he repeatedly claimed to not be "John Allen," yet he constantly posted pics of himself and links to websites with his name displayed in huge blocky letters all over them.. and then sometimes he would actually state his real name and claim to be John Allen.

Just a suggestion.. sorry if this isn't applicable or in the interest of the staff. I just thought it might curtail a lot of future problems that might arise as a result of the things that have been going on with mjshroomer lately.

It's a good idea, but in order to implement it, Ythan would have to get everyone to electronically "sign" a disclaimer. I dunno about the logistics of this.

I imagine it would be as easy as a screen that comes up when you login, requiring you to agree before being able to post anymore. A few clicks along with the obligatory "required reading," and back to normal.

It's doubtful that it would really alleviate any legalities, but I think it would honestly make it harder for someone to claim that they've been victimized or whatever when they've willingly given their personal info out on what is otherwise an anonymous forum.

well, it could be a box, like the one you type in to make posts, only for you to sign your name with your mouse.

Personally, I think the best thing to do about the MJ situation is for people to just drop it, and move on to something else. It's played out, and he's just an old guy who's too easily overwhelmed by the internets... :frown:

I'd really like to see people just stop playing kick the dog and move on. We don't need even more rules and regulations than we already have -- I already feel strangled but what we do have -- but then I'm a crypto-libertarian...

Being a "nation of laws" is wonderful, but then we get all these bureaucrats, and lawyers, and cops, and politicians (who pass even more stinkin' laws) -- all because people can't govern themselves and realize when too far is too far. If we could all police our own thoughts and actions a little bit, then we wouldn't need all these laws and all these lawyers and all these cops...

But these are just the ramblings of hopelessly idealistic dreamer, with a riveted brass heart containing an anachronistic clock-spring that's too tightly wound...

But I digress...

The loss of MJ is like a loss in credibility to the website.

Thats just my opinion and I apologize for being such a bitch about it...

But still. As I see it the guy got shafted because our community wouldnt stand behind him.

Maybe ythan should have stood behind MJ by paying his legal fees so he could sue the shroomery.

I don't care what anyone thinks about the mjshroomer thing. I personally feel like he brought everything on himself, and would feel differently had he not been a jerk to me on multiple occasions for no good reason. I've casually tried to just be nice to him and it was returned with smugness or a condescending attitude.

There are several people here who easily contribute as much knowledge of mushrooms as he did, and don't bring the drama and bad attitude with them.

All I'm saying is that I don't think he should have the right to threaten the Shroomery for the actions of a few of its members. The only reason anyone ever said anything about him was because he posted questionable photographs of himself, and also states his real name.

I feel like breaking your own anonymity should make YOU liable for anything that is said about you. I don't think anyone ever actually said anything about him using his real whole name - so legally, what ground would he have to stand on anyway? "mjshoomer" is an online anonymous handle.

So his existance as a human being makes him liable for your actions? :what:

hey, way to add nothing to the topic dirty. as usual.

as far as MJ, i havent heard or seen what happened to spark this topic, but as far as threatening lawsuits, does he even have a leg to stand on concerning that? doesnt the user agreement cover the fact that any image or statement posted here is public?

anyway, im with Grabba and brainiac, the fact that a few people chased him away is ridiculous. he did quite a bit for this community and the mycology community as a whole.
