So his existance as a human being makes him liable for your actions? :what:

LOL, how did I imply that exactly?

I can't believe you're a moderator of a philosophical forum, much less any forum - you never have any constructive arguments or thoughtful remarks nor are you ever truly concerned with debate, you'd rather just be a patronizing twat whenever you get the opportunity.

It's my opinion that someone who voluntarily breaks their anonymity in this or any other internet forum should not be given special treatment and have someone policing every thread for remarks about them.  Aside from giving his real name, mj also posted numerous photos of himself with illegal mushrooms, children, etc.

He should have expected people to associate those images with the fact that Thailand is known worldwide to be one of the most corrupt and poor countries with an infamous reputation for having a VERY active child sex "industry".

You didn't imply it; you directly stated it. You stated that not being anonymous holds one acountable for the actions of others. While it is a reasonable conclusion that one who prefers to not have their personal identity associated with such remarks should not reveal said identity, it does not hold them liable for the actions of others, duh.

I did not directly state that they should be accountable for the actions of others, rather I said they should be liable for the things said directly about them. They give people the power to make disparaging remarks about them by giving away their personal info, name, whereabouts, photographs, etc.

BTW, not being anonymous is not the same thing as "existing".

What I meant by my original statement was that nobody who has voluntarily shared their real name/photographs should have the right to complain about anything on an anonymous forum - particularly one like OTD.

Anything else, the ratings, etc.. that's understandably grounds for cleanup and punishment of those involved. I don't disagree with that.

My point here is that the Shroomery shouldn't be responsible for anything involving libelous remarks about anyone. This is an anonymous forum which means that anything of that sort shouldn't matter - libeling someone's screenname isn't a crime, and shouldn't cause anyone any sort of emotional harm. When someone voluntarily reveals their name/photo/information, it leaves them vulnerable to personal attacks. These aren't always the case, but usually when someone is as condescending and rude as MJ was they tend to catch a lot of bullshit. Regardless of the fact that it was serious allegations, it still shouldn't give MJ the right to bring the Shroomery into any legal matters - they didn't force him to reveal his name/photographs. It's a bad analogy, but it's like blaming a gun maker for shooting yourself in the foot.

Why should anybody care what you think? Who are you?

MJ's major problem was allowing himself to get all riled up by the words of a few anonymous nobodies. Anonymity is for cowards. Furthermore, the shroomery is not a drug site. It's a mushroom site. Just because anonymous junkies are tolerated here does make the site an anonymous drug site.

Those who ran MJ off should be ashamed of themselves, and the admins who allowed it to happen should also be ashamed of themselves. We traded the world's premiere professional mushroom hunter for a bunch of pussy ass little boy internet thugs. It's nice to know the shroomery has its priorities right.

I just checked your post stats, not a single mushroom related post. No wonder you don't care about mjshroomer, you don't care about mushrooms. I wish all the druggies who don't care about mushrooms would find some other corner of the internet to infest.

Dan, I can understand why you respect him, but he's just a crazy old guy who knows some stuff about mushrooms. He's not god. And if he's going to threaten the site as a whole with legal action over the meaningless words of one person, I don't think we need someone like that around.

He threatened to involve the police with the Shroomery. Once he did that, it no longer matters if he's a pedophile or not. He does not belong here. Good riddance.

I had a girlfriend threaten to tell the cops about my grow once. After that threat, I changed the locks and never spoke another word to her again.

Certain behaviors should never be given a second chance.

Sorry, that sounds like elitist bullshit. I used to have respect for MJ, until i realized that he was an egotistical jerk who didn't have any respect for the community.
This site is about mushrooms, but some of the admins also believe it should be based on freedom. That means your allowed your opinions, but the whole "my drug is better than yours" argument goes against that.
You have just as much of a right to be here with your love of mushrooms, as i do with my love of heroin.

All this talk about anonymous pussies. Maybe some of us just have more common since than to identify our selves on the website that we post our felonious mushroom grows on.
Whats your full name anyway?

All I know is I was huge fan and supporter of this guy until he pulled his recent act and claimed to go to the Seattle's District Attorney about this website. All I can say now is that I've lost any amount of respect for this individual and I think he's a horrible person. Especially since it's his own fault for what happened. I don't post pictures of myself on this website, I don't post pictures of myself with young girls on this website, and I don't take the criticism towards me on this website that seriously. As far as I'm concerned Mushroom John Allen broke the faith and potentially if we believe his story fucked over literally dozens of people with the law on this website. He can go to hell as far as I'm concerned. I'm indeed grateful for his experience and his knowledge and all the work he's put into this community, but when he threatens legal action that could hurt so many of us, I really don't see how anyone could defend this person anymore. Maybe I'm taking it more seriously because I live in Seattle and would like to think I'm a part of the counter culture somewhat here, but as far as I'm concerned Mushroom John is dead to me. I don't know how any of you can defend this motherfucker.

I'm not arguing for a second chance for John. He made his choice to burn the bridge; it's his choice. However, the admins choose not to uphold their agreement to stop the unfounded pedo accusations. There was an agreement if I recall correctly.

A few little cowards thought they could get their jollies by tormenting a grumpy old man. Those with the power to stop it, those with the responsibility to stop it, failed. MJ is gone from the shroomery but still here are those who got their laughs tormenting him as he self-destructed. That tells you something about us as a community and its not good.

Dreamer all drugs are not the same. I'm sorry to hear you are into heroin. That stuff is very bad for you, and bad for the people around you.

A little research will turn up my real name. It's not a secret.

"Dreamer all drugs are not the same. I'm sorry to hear you are into heroin. That stuff is very bad for you, and bad for the people around you."

I respect you a lot Dan. I had a lot of fun hanging with you in Ohio, and think of you as one of my shroomery friends.
I would like to change your attitude towards drugs, because frankly it is counterproductive. Not all drugs are the same, and not all drug users/ drug use is the same.
You would be surprised how many of your shroomery peers are able to use hard drugs in a safe, responsible manner. Mushrooms aren't harmless either. I've seen countless shroomerites talk of being mentally damaged by them, and use them in an irresponsible/dangerous way.
So don't pity me, or look down on me because i use heroin. Contrary to popular belief it is NOT bad for me. It is not bad for the people around me.

It hurts because i consider you a friend, and that you are a fellow DRUG user that you would think less of me because of an ignorant prejudice you have against drugs.

Anyway this is off topic to the thread, so if you would like to talk more about it hit me a p.m.

i just wanted to take a public stand on this, because to many of my fellow drug users are perpetuating prohibition with their belief that It is the drug, and not the user that are responsible for ones actions.

:rotfl:

Are you fucking kidding me? I agree with Dreamer, that is some very elitist bullshit right there.

Speaking for myself I had never heard of this "Mushroom John" character before I signed up here at the Shroomery. His existence on this earth had/has nothing at all to do with my mushroom experiences. Mushrooms were around long before John and they'll be around long after he's dead and gone. "Who are you" to say somebody doesn't care about mushrooms because they think "Mushroom John" is a crazy old cunt? :imslow:

Don't get me wrong, thats cool he dedicated his life to picking actives, however I just don't see the man as being anything special, he's just another face in the crowd like the rest of us.

Yes, that is how you stated it, yet I see no true distinction between the ways of phrasing it, beyond that of ensuring those who engage in disparagement are legally protected when they otherwise might not be. :smirk: My statement regarding his existance is quite apt. His existance implies that he has personal nature; name, whereabouts, photographs, etc.

I've already conceded that, reasonably, it is one's responsibility to not reveal such information if they do not wish others to have the power to disparage them for it; however, this does not make them liable for it actually happening, nor should it.

What necessarily designates the Shroomery as an anonymous forum?

The Shroomery shouldn't.... the individuals being libelous should, in my opinion.

I agree; the Shroomery is not responsible. If he was being libeled, it is those who were doing it themselves that are liable, not the Shroomery.

You call me an elitist, and I will merely say you are uninformed. John Allen has dedicated his life to learning and teaching others about magic mushrooms; his contribution is huge, but you don't know about it because you don't care about mushrooms. I looked at your post stats and noticed that you don't have any mushroom related posts. Nothing, not even one.

Why should your opinion matter so much? There are thousands if not millions of Pub and OTD chat forums on the internet. There are even plenty of drug forums on the internet where people can hang out. Just because the one you hang out in happens to be on the same board as the advanced mycology forum, I'm supposed to value your opinion?

For all those bashing mjshroomer - where is your contribution? What do you do for the shroomery that makes you more important than John, important enough to spread malicious lies about him with impunity?
