I keep a close eye on all my growing PF's, any time one looks to have stopped growing, I give it a small squeeze. I've found that abhorts get soft shortly after they stop growing, but before they get too rotten to eat. The soft ones can be picked, dried and eaten with no ill effects. If I miss them and it starts to get black and nasty I just throw it out.
