I'd read that link but don't bother sourcing the ssaa for non-biased information, give the Bureau of Stats a go: http://www.abs.gov.au/

Ok... wont be a problem

http://www.abs.gov.au/AUSSTATS/abs@.nsf/Latestproducts/4510.0Media%20Release2006?opendocument&tabname=Summary&prodno=4510.0&issue=2006&num=&view=

However, blackmail, extortion and murder increased compared to 2005. Blackmail and extortion went up 10%, to 2.1 victims per 100,000 people, and murder went up by 8%, to 1.4 victims per 100,000 people.

so murder is on the increase since 2005 by only a measly 8%, thank god theres no guns

Other findings for 2006 include:

* Nearly half (45%) of robbery victims were aged 15-24.

* Over two thirds (68%) of victims of kidnapping/abduction were under 25 years.

* Females aged 15-19 recorded the highest rate of kidnapping/abduction, at 16 victims per 100,000 people.

* Males were twice as likely to be victims of murder, and nearly three times more likely to be victims of robbery than females.

* A knife was the most common weapon, used in more than a third of murders (34%) and attempted murders (35%) and in 22% of robberies.

* Over half (61%) of the murders occurred in a residential dwelling, and nearly half (45%) of the robberies occurred on a street or footpath.

so, what I gather is that if you're a young guy, you're likely to die, a girl is
likely to be abducted and most likely raped and you're not safe in your own
homes, much less on the streets

Quote:
Come on Wiccan_Seeker you wrote a great Tek on capsules how can you honestly think that someone who is out to kill is more dangerous with a baseball bat than with a gun?

4 AM does its legendary thing
What I said was:

Quote:
Someone with a baseball bat is more inclined to use his weapon than someone with a gun, because guns have a death stigma. People who are out to kill are fairly rare but they are lethal with any weapon.

Someone with a baseball bat is more likely to use his weapon because he assumes it to be non-lethal (but it very often is) whereas when someone uses a gun he expects it to be lethal. (which it often isn't, it only is after a well-placed shot)

To return to the gay situation: in America "gay bashing" most often is a blunt instruments job, as the purpose is the beat someone senseless but not kill them. The availability of firearms doesn't change that much.

It's lethal intent thats the rarer motive, and these people go about their business with or without gun availability. There are far more people out there that would want to hurt someone than there are people that set out to kill someone. Someone armed with a bat is more likely to hit you with it (because he expects injury) than someone with a gun is likely to shoot you. (because he expects death)

Quote:
You can't stop the crims getting the guns unless you stop all guns getting into the system...

The Shroomery reality should set you straight on that one. There is no way in which a government can stop drug availability, just like there is no way a government can stop gun availability. You assume a government can stop something of that scale, but they cannot. The problem with illegal guns is that they end up almost exclusively in the wrong hands.

Quote:
if it were legal i would be petrified about the possibillity of the little old lady in the grocery aisle packing a DEagle in her knickers...

You're going to be praying that little old lady was there if you ever walk into the wrong crowd. She and her Desert Eagle may be the only factor that makes you come away from the encounter with a strong tale rather than a wheelchair. And the little old lady (in my model of gun availability) will have been thoroughly screened to make sure she doesn't have a criminal, evil, unsound or unstable mindset and will have proven her merit before an instructor at a firing range.
I'd feel safer with 50 caliber granny around

Quote:
If you should worry at all you'd better worry about evil people instead of the weapons they use. People who have been in and out of jails for all sorts of violent crime, who habitually stomp people into a pulp and who at one fateful night happen to set their sights on you. To some people their fellow man is no more than what a mouse is to a bored cat.

What I mean with this is that there are truly nasty people around, and that we all are at varying risk of running into one. It is a fact of life that one in so many people will at one point in their life have to use extreme violence to stop an attacker from harming them.

Some people (perhaps Rail_Gun himself) live under circumstances that put them under higher risk of running into such people. It could be where you live. It could be the route you have to walk from work to your car every weekday. It could be that particular neighbor who is out of control, or the thugs that hang around in your area. It could be your own brother who's a million miles from righteousness. If you feel you are substantially at risk, it is a matter of debate to what degree you may protect and defend yourself and those around you.

In Belgium, where every other house held a shotgun, burglary figures and associated violence were way low. Now the local gunlaws there are toughened up because of a high profile incident involving a sociopath racist skinhead, guns were turned in, and burglary and associated violence are on the rise.

I don't want to own a gun, so I have none. But if I was subjected to a home invasion by some mindless thugs I'm gonna wish I had a gun, not to go high and mighty with it over some insured property but to hide with in a locked room, and give both barrels to whichever thug busts down the door to get to me. For me the home invasion scenario isn't realistic, but many people live in circumstances where such is a scenario to reckon with.

I could be wrong but I think you like me live under relatively peaceful circumstances. Then it's easy, especially under media bombardment, to reach simple solutions on complex problems. You'd probably revise your stance if your circumstances were more perilous.

I'm all for a world of flowers and butterflies, but I've seen enough from the dark sides of humanity firsthand to have strong empathy with the basic human need some people feel to be able to defend themselves and those around them in case life's dream turns into a nightmare.

I don't know what you mean by guns can do things other weapons can't.Millions where killed in Africa in a short time with machetes. The only instance i can think of is a massacre with a very short timeframe like VT tech . In that case you are right. But more people die from lightining each year atleast in the US but thats just one example. It's really an insignificant number and falls under oddities and freak deaths

Yeah i am from Australia. We aren't allowed to carry handguns of any type, in any situation except for law enforcement and certain security.

We definitely don't have assault rifles or anything of the sort. It's kind of laughable to think about it.

Wow that sucks I can go a block down the road and pick up an AK-47 or any other fully automatic assault rifle. I think it's laughable that you don't have access to these weapons. Let's say the worlds communication and power and everything else we depend on gets shut down. Then it's all about fighting to stay alive, because it would be total chaos. Now who do you think would live longer? Me with my assault rifles or you that doesn't have access to these weapons. The same concept can put into several situations. Such as a war breaking out where you live, or another hitler.

Too many points to make, too little time.

Wiccan_Seeker: I don't buy the lethal intent thing at all. Agree to disagree.

Everyone Else: I don't know what the deal is with everyone trying to link guns with crime rates... Or trying to disprove a link. You can bring up all the single year stats you want but i never said anything like that. The "you're not hardcore enough to know what crime means" is kinda stupid too. Of the three times i've been attacked, twice with a knife i've gotten away each time fine and i'm glad a gun wasn't involved. Of all the friends i know who work in pubs and the security industry, armed holdups have always been with baseball bats and knives. Not only is that safer for the patrons but there have also been stories of punters fighting back, again without guns because no guns were involved in the attack.

For the people searching through crime stats (at least it's the abs) and newspaper reports the reality of life here is unless you're a dealer, in a gang, a triad, bikie gang or otherwise get yourself into shit, you will never ever see a gun or need one.

After the world's biggest single gunman rampage in 1996, the ban on gun ownership has stopped any such repeat in this country. I think if it is possible to achieve the same restrictions on guns to the same effectiveness in America as it is here (granted that would be hard), at the very least it would have a very real impact on stopping the kinds of mass shootings that are becoming an epidemic over there.

Quote:
I'm bewildered that more austrailians arent questioning their government, arent looking deeper into these supposed crime stats, and are more than willing to accept at face value what they're told...

Huh? Don't assume so much. Especially since the NRA constantly publishes fake stories about little girls saving the day because they own a M16.

For the record we don't have a bill of rights. We certainly don't have a right to bear arms. Hell our head-of-state is answerable to the leader of a foreign country... and Yes the country works fine. All this talk of "don't trust your govt." and conspiracy talk is another relic of American history and isn't ours. I think you have good reason to question your govt, especially given its track record of secrecy and lying to the people. The mistrust of govt. is engrained in American history to an extent that it isn't here, save for the Eureka stockade. In Aus. a free press and compulsory voting is more effective than having a gun under the bed will ever be.

Anyway its clear neither of us will change either's minds so i'll leave it there. Feel free to shoot me down in flames but i won't respond. If a burglar breaks in tonight i'll grab my toy gun from my bedside, shout at him and get all threatening and tell him i'll shoot and then get myself knifed in the chest. That's the way it goes downunder.

a woman in my home town shot and killed her estranged ex-boyfriend, he violated
a restraining order and was armed. an elderly man also in that town shot and
killed and armed assailant while he was attempting to hold up the convienience
store the man owned.

In the town I live in now, there has been one murder in the last 90 years, most
everyone is armed. in this town I suffered a loss though burglary of more than
$50,000 in tools and equipment, I had livestock that had been shot on 2
different occasions, both times within a few feet of my home. the cops informed
me that it was probably due to the previous owners and the enemies they'd made.
I took care of the situation, I have a truck that sits with a hole in the engine
block at one of my storage buildings, a 400yd shot. I've marched several people
down off this hill at gun point to the police. I've fought back. I've not had
anyone attempt to do anythng in the last 3 years against this property, the cops
warn people as do many of the citizens

most cops in america wish most of the citizens were armed, there would in fact
be less victimization, a dead suspect costs nothing on court day.

your own suggestion for crime statistics show the increase in murders and violent crimes.

Quote:

did it? wasnt there 3 people shot just recently? sure it wasnt 30 or 40 but 3 is
still too many, maybe the gun clubs shouldnt own arms either, obviously it's
those legaly owned arms that are still doing the shootings... let see what
happens to your crime stats after there is a complete ban... ever heard of a zip gun?

Quote:

the world is deluded if they believe guns in america can be banned, those of us
that own them fill fight to keep them, ever heard the term 'civil insurrection',
I'll restate something I've said before, considering that we may have 30k death
by firearm per year, we have more than 6 billion legally owned guns, that's far
from an epidemic considering that australia has no legal guns in the hands of
citizens and has 300+ shooting deaths per year. I see a real problem right there

is that because you're still subjects of the crown, a colony of england?
America staged a little surprise party and did away with it's commonwealth
status, we became a sovereign nation.

you cite an event that's more than 100 years old, the Eureka Stockade and believe
that's the only event in your history where the government has done wrong?
keep believing. I'm sure that's why you guys support having troops with america
in the 'war on terrorism'. your free press must always be truthful, that's why
yo guys only hear about the handful of events that occur, tell us of the
atrocities the australians have committed during this war your government

It's a lot easier to do away with free press and compulsory voting than it is to disarm an unwilling public.

If you don't believe that look at the past couple of US elections and our media.

The government will not care what the people say when they cannot fight back against it.  Tiananmen Square, case and point.
