'Man vs. Wild' Now Truth vs. Deception

LOS ANGELES (July 30) - First there was Santa Claus. Then came
the Tooth Fairy. And just when you thought no one could fool
you into believing in mythical figures again, along comes
Bear Grylls.

Grylls is the star of "Man vs. Wild," an increasingly
popular series on Discovery Channel that recently concluded
its second season. Each episode he parachutes into a different
uninhabited territory without a map or much else in the way
of camping equipment and spends several days trying to find
his way back to civilization.

But this British adventurer is now the subject of an investigation
by U.K.'s Channel 4, which already has confirmed that Grylls
checked into motels on a few occasions when he was depicted
on TV having slept under the stars. Other allegations have
been made suggesting that the crew that records Grylls in
action isn't as hands-off as it might appear to viewers.

Knowing what we now know, it will be a challenge to
watch "Wild" with the same zeal again. Naive as it
now seems, viewers bought the notion that Grylls
really was roughing it. If he cut corners here or
there, what's to stop fans from doubting every
facet of the show?

Discovery has made vague allusions to moving
forward with the series, but repackaged with
greater "transparency." What exactly that means
will be an interesting question for the network,
which hasn't had a headache like this since Steve
Irwin decided to dangle his own infant child within
the reach of a hungry crocodile.

If Grylls thought the barren landscape of the Outback
was a challenge, wait until he faces the ultimate
endurance contest: celebrity notoriety. With a handsome
face and endearing accent that makes him a dead ringer
for Christian Bale, Grylls has more than star quality;
he exudes integrity. There was an effortlessness to his
appeal, he was charming without being a charmer.

Perhaps the appeal of this series has always been that
its verite style reverses a subtle untold effect of shows
such as "Survivor" and "Lost." The way they depict average
Joes living off the land with relative ease has made the
specter of being stranded in the wilderness not as scary
as it once was. Heck, even Gilligan managed to subsist on
coconuts and bamboo.

But "Wild" restored a sense of realism to being marooned
and sold us on the fantasy that we could learn the actual
skills for survival.

Truth be told, though, "Wild" isn't so much 21st
century "Gilligan's Island" as it is a hybrid of
"McGyver" and "Jackass." Grylls has a knack for
improvising solutions to dangerous predicaments
and isn't above grossing out everyone in the process.

Who can forget the time Grylls, burning up in the heat
of the Moab desert, urinated on his own T-shirt,
which he then wrapped around his head to cool his soaring
body temperature. Or the time he hungrily bit the heads
off maggots he found in a frozen animal carcass crushed by an avalanche, cheerfully explaining they were a good source
of nutrition?

For all its self-professed realism, "Man" always required
some suspension of disbelief. Grylls often commented on the
painful loneliness of being alone in the wild, but unless
his camera crew was staffed by bears, he did have some
company out there.

In retrospect, Grylls' preternatural unflappability in
even the most dire of circumstances always seemed a bit
too good to be true. In one episode, he made an interminable
slog through hip-deep snow drifts in the French Alps. Braving
the frigid conditions, his frustration was evident only in the following comment: "I'd really murder for a cup of tea."

For all we know now, perhaps he was sipping English Breakfast
on fine china between takes.

Never been a doubt in my mind.

Man vs. Wild is no more real than Survivor.

Is it still entertaining? Fuck yes.

Does it even compare to survivorman? Fuck no.

But then, once in a lifetime

The longed-for tidal wave

And hope and history rhyme.

Ive been telling my wife this, maybe now she will believe me.

Even though its fake, I find Man vs Wild more entertaining then Survivor Man. He is more charismatic and just does crazy shit for the hell of it. Also the scenery is better in Man vs Wild.

Quote:
July 24, 2007 -- Discovery Channel he-man Bear Grylls, the host of the survival-skills show "Man vs. Wild," is barely the man he seems to be on TV.

On the program, Grylls appears to camp out in quickly-built shelters deep in the wilderness while battling hypothermia and dehydration. But when the cameras stop rolling, Grylls has actually moved to luxurious hotels.

In the last two seasons, he and producers have contrived other scenes to make it appear as if Grylls is more skilled than he really is, a consultant for the show told The Times of London.

"If you really believe everything happens the way it is shown on TV, you are being a little bit naive," said Mark Weinert, an Oregon-based survival consultant, who said producers hired him as an adviser for the show.

Discovery Channel officials declined to comment, but in the U.K., where the show airs with the title "Born Survivor," stunned network officials at Channel 4 said they are conducting an internal investigation.

"Discovery Communications has learned that isolated elements of the 'Man vs. Wild' show in some episodes were not natural to the environment, and that for health and safety concerns the crew and host received some survival assistance while in the field," a spokeswoman for the network said.

"Moving forward the program will be 100 percent transparent and all elements of the filming will be explained up-front to our viewers. In addition, shows that are to be repeated will be edited appropriately."

According to Weinert, while filming in California's Sierra Nevada mountains - an episode in which Grylls, 33, is seen biting off the head of a snake for breakfast - Grylls actually spent some nights with the show's crew in a lodge outfitted with television, stone fireplaces, hot tubs and Internet access.

The Pines Resort at Bass Lake is advertised as "a cozy getaway for families" and is a luxurious hotel with its own spa on a lake.

In another instance, where Grylls was supposed to be surviving on a desert island, he was actually in Hawaii and spent nights at a motel, Weinert said.

The same episode had Grylls building a Polynesian-style raft using only materials around him, including bamboo, hibiscus twine and palm leaves for a sail. Weinert said he actually led a team of builders to construct the raft.

It was then taken apart so that Grylls could be shown building it on camera.

In another episode, viewers watched as Grylls tried to coax what seemed like a wild mustang into a lasso in the Sierra Nevada.

"I'm in luck," he told viewers, apparently coming across four wild horses grazing in a meadow. "A chance to use an old Native American mode of transport comes my way. This is one of the few places in the whole of the U.S. where horses still roam wild."

In fact, Weinert said, the horses were not wild but were brought in by trailer.

Never liked Man Vs. Wild. I don't watch survival shows to be entertained, I watch them to learn how to survive. I watch anime to be entertained.

I honestly doubt bear could hold up to me in survival situations. As yes, I have been lost in the Sierra Nevadas (In desolation Wilderness where a helicopter found me and airlifted me out).

What happened was the previous winter had washed all the trails out due to excess blizzards and snowmelt flooding. Survival isn't too hard as long as you don't panic. The biggest challenge to survival is fear. (It's also the HARDEST to overcome, much harder than anything else).

I always thought man vs wild was fake. I go for shows with believable realism or hysterical comedy. There is no in between for me, very few things can catch my interest for more than five minuets. Maybe I have ADD.

That british poof would not last a day in a PNW winter storm before he went looking for his "cup of tea".I climb the Oregon coast all year and during a big storm being out in it can freeze your ass and soak you to the skin. It ain't no joke shit to put on the tube you will never see on of these guys pull off that one. I don't care where else they suposedly have gone I could drop them places in the winter and come back in spring for the bones within 20 miles of my house. That is if they were truly "surviving" and not "producing a show". When the rain starts at 3pm at 40degrees then the temp drops to 25 by 8-10pm you are likely either dead or wishing for it.I have come back after dark in these conditions and in some ways it was worse than falling thru the ice in Alaska.Despite some frostbite from falling thru a creek and walking a mile or so home the bone cold chill was far worse from being in a near freezing PNW storm for 6 hrs.
I watch this bear and can tell he probably can't do half of what he claims. I mean a poof named "bear"? Do ya think he likes hairy guys?
At least I get the impression Survivorman is at least carrying his gear cause he bitches about it constantly, much more realistic than this poof smiling and posing for the crew.
