An easy way is to take a small piece of mycelium from the cake and use the honey water mycelium tek on here and just inoculate new jars with this liquid it works as fast and makes more jars in the long run.

Instead of going to all the trouble to sterilize the area (which, IMO is not going to do much good without some more potent chemicles), you might want to try the 'oven tek'. Turn your oven on and leave the door open. The hot air will create an updraft around the opening of the oven. Pull out the top shelf and do your work there. The updraft will prevent airborn crap from settling out on your substrate. Someone did an experiment and left petris with standard agar out on the oven rack for an hour. After incubation, no contimination was evident. Generally, if you uncover a petri in an unsterile room, it will be contaminated beyond hope in mere seconds.

Fill your bowl to the rim with warm water, then add bleach to about 5000PPM (thats about 10:1 ratio of water to household bleach). Throw any utensiles you plan on using into the water and let it sit for half an hour. Turn on the oven, wash your hands really well (use strong bleach if it makes you feel better). Dump the bleach water from the bowl, put the stuff on the oven rack, and proceed.

Its worked for me before, YMMV.

put the cake in a ziploc bag that is sprayed with just a little bit of h202. i saw a post where some guy said he did this and i guess it works

thank you all that was very informative and I do like the oven idea, I never even considered that in anyway shape or form. I will go look at the other teks suggested so not to miss anything :wink:
