FAST colonization, h202, very easy.
    #485843 -

Call this AnArKey's quick mycelium expansion tek.

Can't believe how well this worked. Usual disclaimers, this isn't completely original, I used parts of other teks and a few new approaches with h202.

I used wheat berries. Just what the store had, I went for rye but they looked like they would work (and really did). I had some good mycelium to start with (in my case a couple of fully colonized PF 1/2 pint jars). I used H202 and didn't bother being sterile at all when adding the mycelium. I wanted to see how great h202 was, and now conclude it's fantastic. I worked in a way that would have resulted in 100% contamization normally, and got 0% contams when using h202. Heck the lids had big holes in them with nothing between open air and the substrate. No contams. How bout that?

Soak the berries in distilled water for 48 hours.
Drain excess water, and rinse to get all the starch off.
Scoup the berries into your jars about 3/4 full. I used one large 3/8" siZe hole in each jar lid (punched with screwdriver).
Put lids on and cover with aluminum foil, and pressure cook for 70 minutes.
Allow to cool.
Make a water/H202 solution, I use 1/4 cup of 3% H202 (standard stuff from the store), with 4 cups of distilled water.
Inject about 60cc of this into jar.
Shake jar like crazy, getting a nice coat of this protective layer on all the berries.
Crumble some existing spawn (PF jars like me for instance) in a zip lock bag, I did it pretty finely. I used one 1/2 pint for every 6 quart jars.
One at a time, take off the jar ring, turn jar upside down, and crack the lid a bit. This will let the excess h202 solution drain off without letting the substrate fall out. Do this for several seconds, allowing to drain well. Then take a heaping tablespoon of your crumbled spawn, open the lid, and throw it in there. Recover, and shake like mad.
In my case, the jars got such a nice distribution no further shaking was needed.

4 days later, the jars were full top to bottom of mycelium. They could have been done on day 2 for all I know, as I saw them at 24 hours and were going nicely, then didn't see them again till 3 days later. I did store them at about 80F.

BTW, I also tried blending mycelium in h202 solution and using that for innoculant. It worked somewhat, but not nearly as well as the h202 coat then solid mycelium method as described above. I think the mycelium was too badly damaged with the blender, when crumbled they just jumped at the new substrate. :)

The conclusion of my experiment is that I am going to use this concentration of water/h202 on just about everything once I get mycelium going. You should know h202 will kill spores, but once you have healthy mycelium, making more is a snap because sterilty is no longer so vital. I didn't spit in the jars, but I certainly didn't use much care at all.

I pasturized my worm castings dry out of the bag, and then hydrated them with this h202 solution. They colonized great. I'm pretty sure h202 will break down when pasturizing or pressure cooking, which is why I add it after any heating needed. I also used this h202 solution on the casing layer, and in the spray bottle I use for humidification and watering.

Next experiment is using wet cardboard to get from spores to mycelium.

Question: Is H2O2 safe to use so profusely in this process? Is any of it present in the mushrooms themselves?

Obviously, I know that you (AnArKey) are assuming that it would be safe to consume mushrooms produced with this tek; but i just wish to make sure. Thanks.

indeed a smart tek for spawning...
my only question is:
isnt the 1:4 rate of 3%h2o2/water a little bit much? i mean... my wookie friend uses much less H2O2, is that much necessary? (h2o2=expensive)

thanks again

1/4 cup of H202 solution with 4 cups distilled water isn't a 1:4 ratio, it's a 1:16 ratio, or 6.25%, just about right.

H202 is hydrogen peroxide for anyone who still didn't pick up on that.

How could you say H202 is expensive? I get bottles that are about a pint and cost $0.97. Considering the ratio of water, $2 is enough to use H202 on at least 5 bags of worm castings or whatever.

H202 is safe to injest in minor amounts, but considering the mycelium breaks it down as it grows, I doubt there will be any H202 in any resulting fruit bodies. Mycelium doesn't injest the H202, it breaks it down into regular old water.

I can't imagine a reason for not using it on your casings. I'm gonna try bare straw next (which is supposed to be a contaminant magnet) and see what happens.

Here we go again with h202...

I personally am still interested in hearing success with the teks, but i think the flames will start pouring in soon
