laughing gyms?
    #7236600 -

i know that laughing gym season is coming up and i have wanted to find some this fall, but ive been reading up on them and on other websites it has said that you shouldnt bother with them because they are too dangerous. is this true or should i continue to hunt for them?

They are extremely hard to identify without a microscope. Tjis is why people are deferred from hunting them. Also, the Galerina can be macroscopically identical to it and causes death. This is also only one of many dangerous species that look like gymnopilus.

If you want to hunt them, go for it, just post your findings and If we are 100% correct on the ID, you can indulge.

But for now, dont eat what you arent 100% sure on.

Well, to the trained eye, they are simple to sort out, and do not require a microscope. If someone is worried, they should check for green or blue discolouration, indicating the presence of the active chemical psilocin.

It may not be a mushroom for those who are lazy and unwilling to research.

yeah, galerinas are easy to tell from gyms in my opinion.a lazy man might confuse the two,but with a little research the difference is clear, even without bruising.also big gym doesnt have to bruise to be active.:igor:

If you want to find psilocybin in species that are not yet known to be psychoactive, you should do chemical tests. That way you won't get sick and die all the time.

Well anyways... other than you two havin' fun, I would still hold the statement that people often mistake this mushroom for others and It can be mistaken for galerinas in the exact same habitats.

I mean, come on, If some people cant tell the difference between inky caps and subbs people can mistake gyms. Also, there are so many species of it that you wouldnt even know what it could be until you eat it, or send it to a lab.

Yeah, Coon and I are just agreeing that WE would not mistaken a Galerina for a Gymnopilus.

People new to the hobby should be wary, for sure.
