is your perception of time speeding up?
    #7233643 -

at another message board i frequent this question arose

although it does seem to be my perception that the passage of time is increasing, i accredited this to the belief that i find time/dates and such to have much less significance than the average person. so i remained impartial in the discussion and encouraged others to tell me their views, particularly focusing on the older crowd who i figured would be of better authority on the subject(for they have spent a longer period of time experiencing... time)

a great majority of people(all different ages) agreed and relayed stories of how their friends and other random people(from children to their peers aged 50+) brought up the same subject.

so what do you guys think?

as you get older you tend to remain busier, you dont pay as much attention to the
passage of time if your attention isnt focused on time and what to do with it.

i think time speeds up as you get older

me and my friend came up with this theory regarding the speeding up of time during a nice L session.

As a child, the first year of your life was 1/1 of your life, when you were 7 it was 1/7. As you keep getting older the the fraction keeps getting smaller and smaller, as a year becomes only a small fraction of your life.

Probably a lot more to it, but i kind of like it.

Do you mean that events are happening faster?

(If our perception itself was speeding up, then events would appear to happen slower, if you know what I'm saying...)

i remember when i was a kid an hour always seemed like a very very long time, and a month was forever away

now the months fly by and the years are starting to as well

people in their forties tell me its crazy how fast decades fly by....which is crazy because to me a decade is still a longass time

I bet for a baby, each moment is almost eternity

haha i came up with that same theory!

its kinda like the experience of the length of your life stays the same, so as more years fit in the years get shorter

As you get older your hardware starts wearing out and slowing down and your perception of events speeds up as a result.

It's like a framerate; if you're young, you have the speed and stamina to perceive, say 100fps. As you get older, that slows down and you can only muster 80fps. General activities will have less detail and seem to happen more quickly, and more choppy.

There was a segment on some PBS program about just that; the changing of the perception of time as we age...but the PBS website sucks and I can't find the program.

Q: Exactly. For that one fraction of a second, you were open to options you'd never considered. That's the exploration that awaits you...not mapping stars and studying nebulae... but charting the unknowable possibilities of existence.

that's true, when you're a little kid and don't have a job and just have school you have so much downtime that the days can seem so long, but when you're constantly busy with the work or school week or both, the week is over before you know it. Assuming it's not a shitty week that is

Heard about this alot; one of the theories for the coming of 2012 is that a full day will consist of 16.? hours instead of the usual 24.

Most definitely but I thought it was because I was getting older, and I thought as the human brain continues to age and mature it's concept of time gets shorter and shorter. But weeks and months seem to fly by rapidly for me. I seriously cannot believe it's summer time 2007 right now, it feels really strange. Although the speeding up of time is sign of mental illness so I rarely talk about this out of fear. But yeah... lol

wait are you saying framerate perception of time?

every so often my framerate slows down and things get choppy. usually happens when i'm tired.

it started happening after i met level 7, quite severely at first, its been going away since.

i remeber the first time it happened i was picking up a flyer to look at, and my framerate slowed down to maybe a tenth of normal speed and the flyer was the wrong way, so as my hand turned to rotate it correctly the whole world rotated instead of my hand (and i guess some part of me was operating normally because the slowed framerate didn't stop me from knowing to rotate the card. then the framerate spend up to maybe 5x more frames than i normally get as i looked at the card. i was completely sober and so stunned i didn't even get scared. It happened a bunch of times after that, with the rotating and the speedup followed by slowdown. maybe once a week.
Now its just a fractional slowdown of framerate. more annoying than startling. happens every couple of days for less than 15 minutes.

Time goes the same speed no matter what. time seems to go slower while tripping/stoned..etc.
It is all an illusion man.
