Another post for the Car forum - speeding
    #7003316 -

so, this morning, it rained and I wanted to fuck around in the Audi on wet roads. I take a little drive down some scenic highways and such. Get a little sideways here and there, 120+mph in the straights

I'm on the interstate taking it easy, 75 in a 65, I see the front of a Crown Victoria sticking out from under a bridge support. hard on the brakes, I was below 65 when he could have popped me. cop pulls out behind me and follows me 4-5 miles and eventually gets off at an exit.

I can foresee speeding tickets in the Audi, anybody have any advice on laser/radar detectors? Any experience with laser/radar jammers?

I'm pretty sure laser/radar jammers are illegal and the cops can tell if you are using them.

As for detectors I've never used one.

radar detectors are legal in most states, but if a cop sees you with one when he pulls you over, you'll never get out of a ticket again.

... of course, with the right radar detector, you'll never have to worry about that anyway

what you're looking for is the Valentine One ... these are the top of the line radar detectors because they will show you in which DIRECTION the cop car is (forward back right left), how far it is, whether it's a city cop or highway patrol, and it even will let you know when you are being lasered, although by then it might just be too late ... haha.

it also can tell the difference between a police radar and regular stoplights, which most radar detectors cannot.

I believe it costs around $400, but I'm almost certain you get a lifetime of free upgrades with the purchase, and it is easily the best one on the market -- no debate.  My dad has used Valentine One for years with his previous M3 and other sports cars and it works like a dream.  Truly.  It's an investment ... for a lifetime.

for the sake of you, your awesome car, and your insurance, get it.  now.

That thing looks nice, but I think the best possible advice is to simply keep your eyes on the god damned road AND all mirrors when you speed. Only way you get rolled is when you fail to see the cop first. I live by this rule. Never a ticket yet. And i own the streets no matter what car i'm in.

Have fun in that Audi

I had read about the V1, I'll order one when I get some monies saved up, the audi needs a timing belt and wants new diverter valves.

I also read about Laser Park Pro, it supposed to be a parking sensor, it has the added benefit of jamming laser speed guns, it's illegal, but so is speeding and most of the things that I do for fun

benefits of driving a "sedan"

1. people hate getting beat in a race with a four door
2. police haven't taken notice of me until today
3. people don't know what an S4 with a chip, sway bars and exhaust is capable of
4. insurance is the same as a fucking Buick

if it jams radar guns, then you'll almost certainly get pulled over when they try to radar you, because they'll notice that their radar gun works on all cars but yours.  I'd steer clear of that.

I do hope you are a good driver, because otherwise I'm giving you poor advice to help you speed.  Frankly, I'd rather you ticketed than somebody else hurt, but if you have an S4, you just might know what you're doing :smirk:

i've gone to several driving schools

1. rear wheel drive track clinic - Datsun 280ZX
2. rear wheel drive safety clinic - Chevy Corvette
3. front wheel drive track clinc - Saab 900 (no abs) and VW Passat
4. four wheel drive track clinic - Audi A6 4.2L

One problem I had was on the Saab without antilock brakes, downhill turn with a banking to the outside of the curve

the laser parking sensors only work on laser speed guns, the purpose is to jam, detect, slow down and then shut off the jamming to let the copper get a speed.

Parking detectors and the intelligent cruise control systems that are stock on some vehicles also produce this effect and are perfectly legal

Speeding is a moving violation, using a radar jammer (not detector) is probably a misdeamenor and may fall under worse.

Also, you should turn off your ABS system.

radar is different than laser, I haven't read anything about radar jamming, it's mostly laser jamming that I'm interested in

the Audi won't slip unless the ESP is turned off, even with it off and all 350 ft-lb going, it won't slip unless it's wet, even then, only when taking a hard curve

Radar detectors, regardless how nice they seem or how much they do, are complete bullshit. Jammers are illegal.

Think about the simple physics involved:
A cop shoots a radar beam at your car, which is an electromagnetic wave. It hits your car and bounces back. The difference is your speed in MPH. How does the radar detector work? The same way. It senses the incoming radar beam and alerts the driver. But by the time this happens, the cop already has a read-out on your speed before you can slow down from your alert. So, there's really no point, unless your reaction time is faster than the return speed of a radar beam (which it's not, so don't try).

Just be smart about your speeding like others have said. Don't waste your money.

they all use lasers. and with my experience the laser detecters are hit or miss.

okay, lazer's are medical devices by law and a lazer jammer is legal, how well they work is questionable...

radar jammers are complete bullshit, highly illegal, and most "jammers" you see on the market are just scams.

there is one other thing that you are overlooking.

Get a CB radio, when youre on the highway, they cant be beat. all of the truckers on the road constantly broadcast the location of all of the police in the area, and will happily give you traffic reports of the roads ahead.

you can know about a speed trap up to 50 miles in advance with one of those radio's, while most times a radar detector wont signal untill its too late.

only problem with a cb is the big fucking antenea you got to have for it to work more than 300 yards. i can just see an audi with an 9 ft cb antena.lol

thats not true at all, i have a small magnetic antenna on the top of my car, it looks like a cell phone antenna, works just fine, only a foot tall

again, read up on the difference between radar and laser speed detectors, they are not the same and work on totally difference concepts, a physics lesson on the dopper effect and time gating would help

and a CB radio isn't going to do shit when i'm cruising the countryside on scenic highways

I found some interesting stuff on laser jamming, 904nm wavelength is what the laser speed guns use, hence a 904nm will interfere perfectly, a few LEDs on the front and rear will do the trick

ok, there seems to be confusion over the actual speed detecting techniques used by law enforcement

1. radar - radiation in the x-ray frequency - doppler effect - measures the wavelength of incoming x-rays relative to the outgoing x-rays to determine the amount of doppler stretching (shrinkage) caused by your car - divergent beam

2. laser - radiation in the visible/infrared frequency - elapse time - measures the time differences between 3 or more pulses of light between your car and the laser source - point source

i haven't read or heard of radar jamming, whether it's illegal or not, radar detectors are effective because transient K, Ka and Ku x-rays get spread everywhere and travel long distances

i've read and experienced laser jamming, it's legal/illegal in some states, laser detectors are ineffective because the point source of laser light and a little scattering often misses the detector

laser jamming is easy, effective... 904nm light is used by police speed guns, any source of 904nm light is will interfere with the speed gun source/detector... some guy says high beams on a car are effective up to 2000 ft
