Learning Guitar
    #7214323 -

So I finally decided that I'm gonna put some serious effort into learning how to play guitar but I'm not sure where to start. I want to be able to just kinda jam a little bit, play some sublime-like music and things like that.

The basics are the hardest to learn, so don't get discouraged. Condition your fingers, and get the basic chords and scales down. Getting better is much easier after all that.

learn the songs you like. during the course of learning different songs, you will learn new chords and techniques.

Yeah man. Practice a lot with a metronome, I don't do it but it's me.
Don't get discouraged, it will be hard for your fingers at first, and you will suck a lot. That's a fact.
After 2 months of intensive guitar practice, I was able to come up with a decent song.

Keep on!;)

QFT.

and don't fear those callouses, just play right through them, your fingers will toughen up and you will never know you had em.

it's really strange, i remember when i first started and my fingers were cracking and bleeding and just generally sore ALL the time, then about 2 months after i started playing seriously, they just went away, and my fingers looked and felt like they always had, yet, i could play for hours then without my fingers hurting.

Fingers toughen up quickly. Your hands will be more agile and your fingers will stretch easier than before. Don't fear this.

Guitar is way more psychological than pshysical, that's what I can remember.

Do you have an acoustic or an electric guitar to start with?

Electric, it was a birthday present that's been sitting dormant for a couple years

That's how I learned. I drove my parents crazy playing the same 3-chord songs over and over again, but I got better, eventually to the point where they actually liked hearing my music.

Nice, I think I'm just gonna print out the tab for Santaria and play it until I'm decent at guitar

Santeria might be just a little hard for someone just starting out. For good beginner songs, you might want to try Nirvana or Green Day.

Yeah I started playing acoustic a few months ago, just starting with a few Zep/Floyd songs I have always wanted to be able to play songs. They were a bit hard I think and it really discouraged me so I sorta stopped trying. Reading all these I think I will try just learning the basics first and just getting them down before trying anymore songs.

I guess Ill just throw in:

- learn some fun simplish songs
- learn scales
- learn modes
- learn to play in key
- improvise
- dont be afraid to sacrifice some skill for attitude
- dont let your attitude hinder your skill completely unless its intended for that song
- have fun!

Fake Plastic Trees - Radiohead
Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town - Pearl Jam
Creep - Stone Temple Pilots
Wonderwall - Oasis

Pretty much any Beatles song...

What guitar music are you into?

I play bass guitar, and if I remember correctly Smoke on the Water was my first song.

Use a metronome and PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE!

It's going to be boring until you can actually play anything. Then it gets fun.
