Why is Buddhism "hip"?
    #7227315 -

as opposed to Hinduism..... it is apparent that here in the west we have deep respect and reverence for buddhism, and many aspects of eastern culture.

I see so much commercial buddhism. I find that it is cool to be a buddhist, it is interesting... a great conversation starter.
It doesnt even matter if the person really has any beliefs, as long as they label themselves (usually in a smug manner) a buddhist.
"yeah, I meditate". :crankey:

Do you agree that buddhism is hyped and glamorized in our culture? can you name a bad guy that is buddhist in any movie or book?

Now, I am not criticizing a search for knowledge after having your interest piqued, even if it was because you watched the last samurai.... but it seems so many people want to learn just enough about it so they can claim that they are buddhist.

I think what gets me the most is when I see people with tattoo's claim they are buddhist.

Hopefully they'll learn something from the interest in Buddhism.

I don't consider Buddhism any more "hip" than any other philosophy/religion/faith/whatever.

But I do see what you're talking about.

Western mind = commercial
And that applies to Buddhism too.
It's the mean of expression we've been trained to do, by the power of example.
And we still live in a wold where lots of people follow examples.

Can't let go of that tattoo thingy can you?

At one time the Hindu's were cool around my neck o the woods. They are being pushed out by those damned Buddhist's. I think they are going for world domination.

But who cares? They are an easy going lot. I prefer them to the Amerikans.

Most westerners think of uncleanliness and silly superstition when they think of Hinduism and it's most prevalent country, India. When they think of Buddhism, they think of some monk meditating in the mountains at peace with hir inner self. The same as how people associate cannabis with the stereotypical dirty hippie and heroin with the junkie and mushrooms with the loonie outside the market covered in dog feces. It's simple stereotyping. From lack of knowledge of a subject, people will form conceptions from what they see and hear, as well as from completely irrelevant associations. Quite unfortunate really, but thats modern western society for ya.

I have gone for atleast a month without rallying against tats... thank you very much.

But it is a huge contradiction. Decorating the corpse, attachment, egoism...... the list goes on. Tattoos are a direct opposition to the tenets of buddhism.

Yep, tattoos, makeup, hair dye, hairstyling, fancy clothes, television, movies, novels, interior decorators, gourmet food...the list of things which are not in perfect alignment with the "ideals" of Buddhism goes on and on.  So what?

Should everyone who sees value in Buddhist ideas be required to become a perfect example of those ideas the instant they choose to follow that path?  Sheesh...that would leave out just about everyone.

Oh my poor boy. Don't you know that the Buddha never mentioned tats. It's just the religious Buddhists who rail against them. True Buddhists don't give a shit. You my son are mistaking distorted religious zealots for the true faith.

One whole month. Do you get a badge at the 12 step group?

I remember a quote from a movie, where the protagonist was talking about her parents. When asked about if they were in love or not, she replied "I think they are in love with the idea of themselves in love".
I find this too true with your average "western buddhist". They arent truly interested in buddhism, or its teaching, or the goals, but rather they are interested in the image/idea attached with it.

I realize that buddha never mentioned tats, but if buddhism is such a "system of beliefs" rather than handed down edicts from an infallible source, then it is up to the "popes" to decree reasons as to why it rallies against the structure buddha put forth.
Buddha didnt talk about microwaves and televisions either, but the concepts he put forth, which are adhered to, set a pretty solid precedent as to why, if buddha was alive, he would rally against them.

There are posers amongst the practitioners of any school of thought.  Does it detract from the ideas?  No.

I agree that Buddhism has gotten a lot of attention in the last decade, what with the Dalai Lama co-authoring books & touring the U.S. Inevitably, this results in some posers taking up the Tibetan prayer flags.

Would he? I mean, I agree that fundamentalist Buddhists would rally against them, but would the Buddha care? He saw all material things as impermanent, so why would it matter to him?

Wannabes rule amerikan culture. Nothing to be done about it. If it ain't the Buddhists it's crystal magick and new age glop. Or your favorite football team.

im not faulting buddhism in any way. Nor am I saying that it does detract from the religion.

just stating that you should type in buddhism on myspace and see what comes up. I havent, so i dont know, but im willing to bet that what you find reinforces what I am saying.

I just saw a bunch of buddhism threads, and wondered why it echoed so much with the hipsters. Is it really the message, or the image associated it, like the guy with the 93 post said.

It's the latest and greatest in the new age craze IMO. I think it's pretty harmless and a few take it seriously. I think we are lucky that it's growing even among the wannabe's. It could be lots worse. Like fundamentalist Christianity or fundamentalist Islam. You don't see Buddhists shooting up the place for salvation.

but it is the opposite of fundamentalism.

If christianity and islam were hip, I doubt anyone would take it to fundamentalism, just like the hipsters arent taking buddhism to fundamentalist extremes.... they just make sure the first thing you see when you walk into their house/room is a buddha statue and a copy of "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle maintenance".

Buddhism isn't hip anymore than toes are hip.

what is necessary is the systematic killing of the Buddha so that one reaches the top of the moutain rather than hanging around at base camp where everyone circulates the same stories over and over again, but no one feels like going higher

this is what hipness is, part of the road is now paved for just about everyone to walk. there is no sacrifice in quality, it is just that more people congregate only around a certain quality point and few want to spiral out into the nether-realms of understanding to truly gain new ground.

if Buddhism truly is popular, then I would assert that we are in for good times. However, I do not notice it being popular amongst anyone other than those interested in conscious-ness expasnion.

first of all, with the whole tattoo thing, tattoos were around in the day of the buddha, and if he did say anything about them, i dont think there is any record of it. and i would think, a buddhist would say that there's nothing wrong with tattoos, just don't be attached to them.

and hinduism was the hip thing in the '60s. it wasn't buddhism so much.

If one philosophy or another inspires people in different cultures, whether it be Buddhism or Taoism, why does it matter? Perhaps there is more attraction to Buddhism than Hinduism because Buddhism is simpler and constrained more to the teachings of the Buddha while Hinduism is vast and a couple thousand years more ancient, with no central human figure to study. Learning about Buddhism implicitly includes the key ancient Hindu concepts of dharma and karma also, so the philosophy is not so much separated as explained in different formats.

Buddhism will probably continue to have a growing appeal to Westerners due to its truths in the modern day, when so many people can find no happiness in life and resort to antidepressants and suicide rather than meditation and simplicity.
