Ever been to a shuttle launch?
    #7211128 -

Thats something I would love to see within my lifetime. Just the feeling of overwhelming pride for humanity. Maybe even dose a little. I think I would start bawling my eyes out.

Ever have an overwhelming feeling of pride for an accomplishment made by the human race?

So we finish the eighteenth and he's gonna stiff me. And I say, "Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know." And he says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness." So I got that goin' for me, which is nice.

I grew up and live in Florida, so yeah, I've been.

The Space Shuttle is definitely something to be proud of. It's one of the few US accomplishments lately that I'm proud of. The shuttle has some design problems, but considering that it was designed in the 60s when computers with 4 kilobytes of memory were pretty advanced, it's an impressive achievement. The engineering problems that had to be solved for the first time from scratch are staggering.

The Russians also developed a space shuttle which turned out to be a huge boondoggle and the only reason it didn't kill a bunch of cosmonauts is because it flew only once, unmanned, for 200 minutes, and never flew again.

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.

I don't know how much pride I'd have. Millions of people are starving in our world because they don't have access to the same variety of resources that go up in smoke every time us :monkeydance: send something out of the atmosphere.

In terms of technological achievement I do not disagree that it is impressive. But I just don't see the value in it. Flaunting our technological achievement is just another means to ignore our shadow IMO; to make us feel that we are advanced even though we are still primitive.

Much technology developed to make the space program work has helped humanity in other ways. Water purification systems, for example, that help stop things like cholera epidemics in the third world. There's a very long list.
