I am serious. SOme say it is, some say itn't. I think its one of those things almost everyone does sometimes, but when they're alone(obviously). I'm not talking about psychotic ramblings. More like thinking aloud. I think this usually stems from loneliness.

Lately I've been catching myself thinking about what it would be like to converse with people I know, I then proceed to imagine what the conversation would consist of, adding clever dialogue for myslef and the other party.Nono, I know why I do this. It is because of loneliness, and possibly depression.  I soon get very much into it, and go on for several minutes, and eventually start talking aloud without even noticing immediately.

Sometimes I get so enthuised in my imaginary conversation, I smile, and laugh, and add hand gestures and whatnot.

Then I realize what I'm doing and wonder...is this normal?

I talk to myself all the time, when I have been up for over a week

Ummm. I could never bring myself to talk if there was no one there to hear me say it. I can't talk to animals either. When I do talk, I talk very quietly and nervously.

My 'problem' is pretty much the opposite of yours. Why CAN'T I talk? I have tried to talk with no one there.. but I can't force the words out.. I just end up feeling really stupid and just kind of mumbling something almost inaudible or nothing at all.

I can't shout at all. I can't experess my emotions. I'm like a fucking robot.

I think talking to yourself is a very insecure reaction to not being able to be that show-off extrovert that you once were/want to be. I don't think it's normal at all. Extroverts piss me right off. Love you all though, peace etc etc.

But uhh.. I'm obviously just as insecure and messed up. I think my problem also comes from loneliness/not socialising much. I spent like 2 years staring at my bedroom wall and hardly leaving the house.

I do it when I'm driving all the time...especially if I'm stoned. Now that I've been busted and had to quit smoking it hasn't been happening so much.

I've often wondered if it's normal as well, but then I ask myself..."what is normal?" and I get over it.

I use my staged conversations with people to help develop my opinions on certain subjects and I don't think there's anything wrong with it as long as it doesn't happen compulsively, or around other people.

On a side note, I've been having crazy dreams every night since I stopped getting high all day, every day. It kind of makes me wonder if there's a correlation between smoking pot and having dreams, or if it's just that I don't remember my dreams when I'm high all the time.

...ahhhh life:gethigh:

I disagree. You should meet some professors. Bright and highly educated people do this all the time. No psychosis.

1. It's irrelevant whether you agree or not, it's a case of psychosis by deffinition.

2. You apparently think that bright and highly educated people doing this means something, but it doesn't. Psychosis is not stupidity, it's separation from reality, whether the case is slim or severe.

Thinking about how someone else would react to what you think, and you have a hypothetical conversation thread. How do you think plays and novels get written?

By thinking objectively in unified thought. I'm a writer and I know that.
If a mind is conversing with itself then it is divided. If a mind has something to gain by conversing with itself then it has to be working based from a split standpoint.

I've had a confused mind and a whole one, I'm familiar with both territories. The inter-personal conversations disappear with a healthy mind, and the information that used to be supposedly found in those mental conversations is just always readily available, no conversations needed. More importantly, once the mind is unified, you realise that most of what you thought you were realising during those conversations was off, & crazy to an extent.
Viewing 2 halves separately does not present the same conclusions as when everything is whole and one. Nor does having a whole viewpoint give someone the false sense of accomplishment that concluding a mental conversation does - which makes people feel as tho they just got somewhere, found something out, tho where they got to is still not yet where they would have always been if their thoughts hadn't been divided in the first place.

Remember that psychiatric meds are incredibly profitable and the most widely prescribed here in the US, so it's to the benefit of Wall Street to label as much normal brain activity as possible as in need of their drugs.

Well that's good evidence for nothing.

If you want to pat each other on the back assuring yourselves that there is no detrimental reason behind this behaviour just because you and a bunch of other do it, well, that's very stupid. I'm not saying fight it, you have to work through it... but don't pretend that your minds are not less than fully healthy.

its my belief that what you are talking about is perfectly healthy, yes and the different people and animals in my head all have different personalities, its fine to boost their activity through use of the imagination or conversation, just remember they are in your head thats all (AND ANOTHER DIMENSION MUAHAHAHAHAHA)

So multiple personalities (which is your personality split into many, aka a split personality) are inside your head, but they are not overpowering you) coming out through your behaviour). It would be healthier if those multiple personalities were all together and just one. What you describe is a subtle psychosis, just not bad enough to really affect you - yet it is affecting the way your mind is handling its thought and approaching situations.

No, he'd be schizo if the individual personalities within him were hostile towards each other - something that's more likely to happen under intense stress, a bad trip that ends bad - etc. Depression does not exist without there being a negative self-belief within a person, and while that is not generally referred to as schizophrenia unless it has a loud presence, it is the same function within the mind, but on a milder scale.

Through analysis the pessimistic thoughts can be found, and then through more analysis the thoughts that cause the negative belief can be understood and corrected.

Compulsive talking to oneself is a neurosis, not a psychosis.

Is it insane? Sure. A lot of things people do in western civilizations are insane. We think too much; we are obsessed with the past and future; we are deathly afraid of stupid things like looking foolish to a stranger; we loathe ourselves sometimes; we worry about the same stupid shit everyday.

Insanity is the norm in our society. That means it is normal. Is it healthy? Probably not... dialogue with oneself (in my experience) is usually some form of mental masturbation; we like to hear ourselves talk. The mind just does this by itself.

I do it, and I'm trying to do it less. Interestingly, I only started doing it regularly when I started smoking weed regularly. I think the reason is that it helps me to keep my thoughts clear when I'm high if I verbalize them.

Nope, being overly self-conscious to the point of anxiety is a neurosis.
Multiple personalities, conversations with oneself, are psychotic characteristics.

A person who talks with themselves by no means is neccessarily overly self-conscious.

I said the same thing earlier on. There may be a bunch on people here who can claim to all have conversations within their head, but it's still represents a less than fully healthy mind.

Well, that wasn't the topic of the thread.

Clearly, if it is less than optimal it will matter at least in some areas, even if in others it won't.
It'll keep you from your maximum potential without you even being aware of what you're missing - because you'll accept the conclusions and sentiments of your mental conversations as deffinitive.
It doesn't make you a bad person.

I usually do it out of boredom/loneliness.

I think the only way to learn something from conversation is when its with other people. I can't really learn anything useful from myself, can I? No. That is impossible
