Is talking to yourself normal?
    #7164849 -

I am serious. SOme say it is, some say itn't. I think its one of those things almost everyone does sometimes, but when they're alone(obviously). I'm not talking about psychotic ramblings. More like thinking aloud. I think this usually stems from loneliness.

Lately I've been catching myself thinking about what it would be like to converse with people I know, I then proceed to imagine what the conversation would consist of, adding clever dialogue for myslef and the other party.Nono, I know why I do this. It is because of loneliness, and possibly depression. I soon get very much into it, and go on for several minutes, and eventually start talking aloud without even noticing immediately.

Sometimes I get so enthuised in my imaginary conversation, I smile, and laugh, and add hand gestures and whatnot.

Then I realize what I'm doing and wonder...is this normal?

I do what you're talking about. It's normal and healthy. I'd compare it to day dreaming. If anything it's like an involuntary mechanism used to build social skills.

I crack jokes, have riots, and argue with myself quite frequently. Sometimes I will even hold full-on debates, but this is generally how I consider things from all perspectives, by taking opposing sides.

No it is not normal by any means. This is how I communicate, but if taken too far, can edge into a split personality disorder. Sometimes I will just hold these ridiculous mind movies in my head and it's just an utter riot, a collasal blasphemy of holy anarchy breakdown in my brain, and I just can't help it. You gotta give in to it you become its bitch. Hahaha!

"to converse with people I know, I then proceed to imagine what the conversation would consist of, adding clever dialogue for myslef and the other party"
yeah i do that too, i think its more a reflex then anything, maybe from looking at it from the brains perspective, if you are useing similar parts for talking with people, then other parts of the brain are also stimulated and react as reflex. to if you are imagining a conversation then your lips and mouth and thought also participate. like trying to only wiggle your little toe.

i think it is also helpful because (esp when tripping) to sort or thoughts, like when you have many streams of thought it help you pick one, and or allows you to 'materialize' your thoughts into a tangible idea instead of jumbles of emotional thoughts. i find it helps me organize what im trying to think about into a steady linear stream.

if im tripping in public i try to carry an apple with me so that i can 'talk into it' as i eat it, it helps hide the rambling.

Well written thought, d33p!

I kinda feel that way myself, and also I think its something that goes on in everyones head, but only you describe in a way that may perhaps not be common; hell analyzing yourself is often hard and condfusing.

I, too, have heated lively realistic verbal battles between sometimes multiple people in my head. I primary use them as manifestations of different points of view to better separate ideas. Hell sometimes inanimate objects talk for the pupose of my mental excercise.

In short, I think its normal.

Both "fake conversations" and talking to yourself are normal.

Reading aloud to yourself is a great idea as well, to proofread something you're writing for grammar and flow.

I talk/think out loud to myself all the time...it solidifies ideas more and I tend to retain them better, or it helps me work through whatever I'm working on

Depends on what "normal" means to you. It is somewhat of a split personality thing and I don't think it's too healthy. All these people who say it's normal... why? Beause you do it too?
I've experienced this too, slightly, tho only after periods of intense drug abuse that has left my mind chaotic and out of control. When this happens your mind is out of control, and it's when you snap into awareness of what you're doing that you stop.

It may be common, but it's due to having a mind that's not all together - which can be changed.

Clearly he is answering and talking back to himself. It is a mild stage of psychosis, which can be repaired (I've done so for myself 3 times now, all after intense druggage. It took a long time though[say a year or two]). Stay off drugs, and learn to analyze your thoughts so you can start putting two and two back together.

I disagree. You should meet some professors. Bright and highly educated people do this all the time. No psychosis. Thinking about how someone else would react to what you think, and you have a hypothetical conversation thread. How do you think plays and novels get written?

Remember that psychiatric meds are incredibly profitable and the most widely prescribed here in the US, so it's to the benefit of Wall Street to label as much normal brain activity as possible as in need of their drugs.

talking to yourself is normal, answering yourself is a whole other story.

It's definately a sort of knee- jerk reaction to loneliness. I'm a rabid extrovert, and if I'm deprived of social interaction for more than a few days I start to talk to myself.

It's perfectly normal for me, even soothing sometimes.

Think about it this way: we all have a running dialogue active within our minds. Some of us vocalize such dialogue, others don't. Normal.

its my belief that what you are talking about is perfectly healthy, yes and the different people and animals in my head all have different personalities, its fine to boost their activity through use of the imagination or conversation, just remember they are in your head thats all (AND ANOTHER DIMENSION MUAHAHAHAHAHA)

sry...

but seriously talking to yourself helps solve problems, have you ever heard of someones astral body going out while they sleep and solving problems they might have with another person, well if your talking in a conversation where you feel the other person cant hear (and your making up what they say) its actually a similar experience, so i think its healthy for both parties not just yourself

but then again ive been locked in a mental hospital before, so you might not want to trust me

and theres nothing wrong with answering yourself if its at a later time, say i ask myself what 2 times 2 is (just an ex.) then a minute later i suddenly know the answer, well technically my brain just talked to me, or my brain just talked to itself not sure on that one yet

ne ways peace
