Normal
    #945678 - 10/09/02 02:40 PM (18 years, 11 months ago)

There are many different people in this world, as you know and we have all had different experiences, opinions and different lifestyles. That is a fact. We know this because of the people we interact with. However, there is one question that intrigues me:

What is normal?

I take this subject very seriously. Is having a two-story house, with a three-car garage, nice, clean all-American family, and outstanding school normal?

(Definition of normal: 1 occurring naturally normal immunity 2 of, relating to, or characterized by average intelligence or development b: free from mental disorder)

That is the actual definition of normal. Now does all of what I mentioned sound natural? How many people, on average, have that? As for those who do, did they lead a normal lifestyle to get that? Some of that requires money. They could have stolen it. All-American family, what is that? People who are rich and always happy? How many of those are there? Let's try and break this down.

The human mind: Perhaps there is no normal. Maybe normalcy is just an excuse of what we can or can't be. For instance, someone saying they can't become something because they didn't have a "normal" childhood, or vice-versa. Maybe normalcy is something the mind perceives to not have. (Looking at someone else's lifestyle and perceiving it as normal because they have something you don't; that perhaps you would like to have). Normalcy, to me, is overrated. People make it out to be something it isn't. Better yet, it might be that people have made this interpretation of normal to be people who have no problems. However, normal is just a word. Like every other word used. Only, that word is one of the most important. Personally, I have nothing to compare normal to. If you can, let me know.

Up bringing: I think the way a person is taught is a BIG influence on their thoughts. Parents might say that eating ice cream with a spoon is normal. How do you know? Perhaps because that's the only the way they ate it? That doesn't make it normal. Just for experimentation, I ate ice cream with a fork the other day. Does it work? Yes, just as good as a spoon. I would recommend anyone to try it. Anyways, parents influence their children to be whatever they want them to be. If parents think homosexuality isn't normal, then that's the way they'll teach their children. Whether the children are influenced or not, is left up to nature.

The mind has its own theory of normalcy; it could be an all-American family, or a completely freaky family.

Basically, what I'm saying is: Normal is not something we can judge because we haven't been subjected to everyone's world. It isn't what we think is normal. That doesn't make things normal. It doesn't make anything but an opinion. Normal is normal; which is just a word.

I grew up in upper-middle-class "normal" suburbia, and I have worked so damned hard over the past two decades to be abnormal, that reckless endangerment and sick abandonment are now "normal" for me...

I think i know where you are coming from.

Whenever i try to talk to my parents (especially my mom) about issues like homosexuality, drugs, death, religion, philosophy, or anything thats on my mind, she just CANT understand what my point is.

She has all of these precepts about all of those topics that she just cant give up. For example, she's a hardcore christian. everything is about jesus with her. Homosexuality is JUST PLAIN WRONG in her book. SHe cant explain why "the bible says" thats the answer i get. If i try to rebut with "homosexuality exists in nature, it is built into our dna and our genes, it is an evolutionary construct designed to help us. why would god put it in our makeup if its, quote 'an abonination' endquote?"

The answer i get to that sort of question is "nono, its a temptation of the devil."

"the devil didnt make our bodies mom, god (supposedly) did. Does the bible say that the devil can change our DNA? "

"Are you gay, is that what this is about?"

"What if i am?"

"ARE YOU?"

"WHAT IF I AM?"

....

anyway, that goes on for awhile. I think my parents think im gay.

Sheepish, your little dancing doofus in your signature is pretty cute. Is that a New Zealand cartoon character or just a random .gif from the web at large?

Does New Zealand even have cartoon characters? I know they have sheep and mountains and Maoris, and some good moviemakers, but that's about the extent of my knowledge.

It's when the men and the sheep get together for a little extracirricular "fun" that things get really interesting over there

Normal is everything you want to be but hate to be. Conformity is another name too.

Good job.

That's a better definition than the one the author of this post provided.

It works.

The definition the author was talking about seemed to describe biology, intelligence, and mental health respectively...and this thread really isn't talking about any of that.
