whats the trick to getting cd/dvd roms out of their bays???

im trying to yank this cd burner out of this computer before i take it up to the computer store to hock it, but it moves like 2 inches and then locks back in and wont move anymore.

how the hell do you get these damn things out?

you're supposed to take out all of the screws and then it should slide out easily. if it's a laptop i wouldn't know but i'm guessing you'll just have to remove some screws also. what computer is it?

hmm. i thought i got all the screws, ill go check. its an HP

im gonna dump the memory, motherboard, processor and cd drive. ill probably be lucky if i get 20 bucks from the place. im gonna see if theyll throw in an extra 512 of sdram for my dell.

dude, ram is dirt cheap these days. i'm sure you can get 512 for like 10 bucks online.

yeah but i figure if im swapping some shit in, might as well get it while im there.

im not really doing anything else to my current dell.  i plan on building an HTPC within the next 60-90 days depending on cash flow. 

by the way, i looked again, there were no screws.  i couldnt figure it out.  so i ripped off the front cover and slide it out that way.  :smile:  worked like a charm!  slide it out with ease, snapped the front case back on.  (i wouldnt have done that if i was keeping it)

and yeah, it's supposed to slide out the front. i don't think it comes out any other way.

haha every time!

now i got this cd burner, made by samsung.

i am going to rip my current dell computer apart and install it. it currently has stock a cdrom, 3.5" floppy, and a zip disk. i never use the zip or floppy, but i might as well keep them installed.

so the IUD cable going from my cd rom should be hooked up by master (black) and then there should be a slave (grey) correct? and then its just plug in play. but what if there is no slave on the IUD cable? i have two here in front of me that do for sure. but one has a blue cpu board connection and the other has just a black? which one would i use?

how would i then get my computer to recognize the new burner? i will have to download a driver correct?

to be completely honest i never pay much attention to the whole master/slave thing. i just plug my shit in and see if it works correctly, if it doesn't i change something and try again. definitely not the standard operating procedure but whatever, it works for me. :shrug:

and about the drivers XP usually recognizes all new hardware right off the bat but if you have the burner's driver cd use that. if you don't have it you might have to download the drivers if your OS doesn't recognize it but it probably will.

yeah i dont have the original cds for the burner, but i do have xp pro. so i guess i should be good to go. well see what happens. ill be back in a few. thanks.

alright, the burner is in, it has power and opens and closes properly. all in all, this plug in play computer shit is pretty easy, now i just have to figure out what the hell i am plugging into what on where ever inside. i havent tested it to burn a cd yet, but i will in the next 5 minutes.

my zip drive was on the slave, or cd2 grey port, and there were no empty ports on the motherboard to plug a new ide cable into, so i just unplugged my zip drive. i never use the thing, but is there anyway i can have it hooked up as well with out there be any empty ports left on the board?

thats cool no biggie. someone will chime in eventually.

i tried burning a cd, music, data, anything, and for some reason it is not reconginzeing there is a cd in the tray. i uninstalled the new driver, restarted my computer when prompted, and it re-installed the drivers again, but im still running into the same problem.

anyone got any ideas?

yeah assigns it a letter, knows that its a samsung. i wonder if the drive is just fucked up somehow and cant read cds?

honestly i dont know, it was from a computer i kind of "aquired" from work. i took the hard drive, that works fine. i would assume it worked before, but i guess there is no telling.

any other things i could try? or is it fucked for my computer you guys think?
