Dead CD/DVD Drive on my Laptop.

So this thing appears to be dead. It makes some very loud and repetitive clicking noises when a CD is loaded, and it will recognize a CD full of pictures or music. But it won't see any data on a game CD or a DVD at all.
So how do I replace it? I see that it just slides out and can be replaced like that. But do I need to buy one from the manufacturer (Alienware), or can I just buy a general one from Best Buy. I mean, are they interchangeable, or are they model specific?
Second, any drawbacks to an external CD/DVD as opposed to replacing the internal? Am I going to have to worry about data transfer speeds being lower vs. an internal?
Thanks, guys.

check if you have a warranty..
if not, get one online (tigerdirect, newegg, etc)
that's what i would do.
check ebay too.
external isn't really a replacement.. if you wanna carry around another drive and have external power source every time you want to use a cd, then go ahead..
i thought laptops were meant to be portable

This thing is in no way, shape, or form portable. It's an alienware desktop replacement and weighs a hefty amount. I would not try to carry it around.

I don't know what that machine of yours is built for, but I just got this for my gaming PC
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822173048
If you're looking to buy an external optical drive, you may want to go with this. I was looking for a bigger external HD for all my games when I found it.
It's good that you don't need it to be portable, because I'm sure this is heavy. But if you needed to work on a machine other than your own, maybe one without a working disc drive of its own, you could plug your own HD and optical drive right into it via USB.
