well, 1st you need http://www.dvdshrink.org - best if used in conjuction with nero 6.

dvdecrypter is for the rare dvd that dvdshrink cannot handle - good to have on hand, but shrink should be your first tool.

check out this tutorial: http://www.dvdshrink.info/fulldisk_basic.php

lol dvddecrypter is in NO way a all in one backup program unless all the DVDs your backing up are under 4.7gb

I suggest http://www.dvdshrink.org and any good ISO burner such as Alcohol 120% or Nero (I use Alcohol 120%)

I like how shrink will go directly to nero.

I usually use DVD Decrypter and then Nero Recode. I just don't like shrink that much. I used it when I had older firmware on my current burner and Nero didn't like it. It would probably work now that the problem is fixed, I'm just partial to decrypter. So far I've backed up over 600 different DVD's with no problems so far. Yes, 600 (not including over 100 still in their case). I'm obsessive when it comes to my DVD's. I want everything!

By the way - will I be able to end up with a watchable file on my hard disk i.e vcd, avi or divx?

using shrink, yes. They are .vob files - open with whatever dvd viewing software you use (you can delete these files, of course - I never have a need for a local copy if I burn them to disk).

maybe he has a dual burner and can back up full dvds.
If thats the case u dont need dvd shrink.
if u do shrink them, make sure u uncheck all the languages u dont need so u can
have less compression on the video.
have fun with all ur cheap dvds. =)

I've heard good things about clone...
I use dvdshrink + nero almost exclusively though.

As above, DVDDecrypter, DVDShrink - but I'm currently using a copy of CloneDVD2 in preference to DVDShrink now as it's easier IMHO to remove features like trailers on rental discs.

Clone is available on a 30 trial download, but there is a registry hack available to turn it into a full product.

dvd xcopy does hack movies apart if you want to. it also lets you copy the whole film, extras, and trailers all on one dvd.
