no that message comes from not finding anything to boot off of in the cd-rom. Unless your trying to boot off a bootable cd rom its not a problem.

Does windows see your cd-rom?

Double Click the mycomputer icon on the desktop, there you should see at least a hard drive icon with c:\ and its disk label. You might also see a floppy drive and your cd-rom(s) listed. Or you may recieve a message telling you that its possible to break things in here and are you sure youd like to see whats behind door #1, click the Show me the contents then youll see the above.

Hmmm...
My guesses are: Did you just install it? Is your CD hardware set up correctly to manufaturer's specs (and in BIOS)? This could cause problems.
What about the drivers in Windows? Do you have the latest (For Win98SE) drivers?

I have the same problem with my newly built AMD XP 2100+ behomoth. Unfortunatly, I too cannot resolve this problem either. CDs in the drive are not the problem as I inserted Windows 2000, various Linux distributions etc. etc. Some disks will work (Mandrake 7.2 and Debian (Current)) while other CDs won't (Windows 2000, Redhat).

Are the master / slave jumpers correct?

make sure drive is set by jumpers, if there is a HDD as master make it a slave.

when system boots and starts the memory test hit DEL <some it's Ctrl+Alt+S or F2> go to auto detect drives hit enter it will set them up for you, F10 is usualy save and exit

if you still have the problem then you may have a bad drive or non-atapi compliant one or possibly a bad controller
