Need help choosing a dvd burner.

I am interested in buying a dvd burner, but honestly I have no clue what I'm looking before. Dvd media and hardware is one of the few area of technology where my tech knowledge is not quite up to par.

I have no clue whether to buy a + or - style burner, or a combo burner.

My only criteria:
-Uses relatively cheap media
-Has to be external and usb connected
-Somewhat affordable

That's about it. I was looking around online, but I'm kinda over my head, and I don't feel like getting ripped off.

Also, would it be cheaper (and easy) to buy an internal drive and just install it in an external case?

thats a great deal on a good external DVD+-RW that supports dual layer +R for an 8.5GB disk.... not too shabby at all.

Make sure the burner you get lets you set the DVD booktype. This will greatly increase compatibility with set-top players by making your burned DVD appear as a regular retail disc. I got a high end Plextor burner which I thought would be really sweet, but I ended up very disappointed because none of the discs I burn will play except on my computer. Most DVD players can physically read DVD?Rs but they may see an "invalid" booktype and give you an error. This feature doesn't add anything on to the cost of the drive and if you plan to burn any movies it's pretty important. Just my two cents.

Ive got a cheapy burner (8x microadvantage dual format dvd1008 is there model number i think for 40 bucks after rebate) that has done 1000+ -r disks. That all play fine on my cheapy dvd console(searched around it plays all formats, vcds,svcd, ntsc or pal disks, and easily set to region free permanantly) cyberhome ch402 60 bucks its about 3 years old. I have never played with booktypes or anything and all my disks play fine in my parents players, friends, or game consoles(xbox/ps2). The only problems ive had is crappy disks. Avoid blue bottoms ive found.

Your problem Ythan sounds like an unfriendly console. Most sony consoles are fine with any type of disks. Do research on videohelp.com about consoles before you buy one. Some high end consoles wont play shit for bootleg disks.

Dont overheat your drives either. I realized i was doing that with cdrs, burning like 10 disks in a row id start to get issues.

Yeah, I think I'll be using it mostly to burn games, since I have a modded PS2, but I'm sure I will sometimes use it to burn games. Where do you get dvd media from?

meritline.com or supermediastore.com or at officemax where i work.

I was on ProdiscS03 kick for a while as ive had no problems with the media, its cheap, nad has good top coat... but its getting harder to find. There is 8x prodiscs that are not as good.

While we're on the subject.  Anyone have any good DVD burning software?  I'm looking to make back up copies of my DVD movies :smile:.

However I'm looking for software that will allow duplication with NO COMPRESSION. 

I'm somewhat of an audiophile, so  I would rather burn a DVD movie onto two separate discs instead of compressing it to one (I only have a single layer burner).

Suggestions?

clonedvd+anydvd or dvdshrink. Its the video that usually gets recompressed not the audio with most of them programs. I thought atleast.
