I don't think so. Use k3b if you are using linux. Its one of the most mature linux projects out there. CDr's and DVDR's need buffers and other things that dd does not do.

this is what i ended up going with:

NEC 8X Dual Layer DVD+/-RW Drive, Model ND-2510A

Specifications:

Read Speed: 40X CD-ROM, 12X DVD-ROM

Buffer: 2MB
Features: Vertical operation possible, Anti-dust seal, PC 2001 Certification, MultiRead compliant.

Ive gone thru many dvd / cd burners. I guess i just over use em.

I got a microadvantage dual format 8x drive that makes burns just fine, it just seamed to die after about 200 burns. 2nd one ive had is dying now, i can just swap it for a new one at work tho. They go on sale for about 50 after rebate regularly.
