DVD burner problem
    #3926193 - 03/16/05 05:36 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

I've been downloading concert DVDs (the legal kind). Unfortunately, the burner is 4x, while the DVDs are 8x (I didn't realize this until after I bought it). It's a Hitachi GCA-4040N DVD burner, if that helps (or even if it doesn't, it's still a Hitachi GCA-4040N).

After it didn't work, I noticed on the box of the DVD-rs that an upgrade of the firmware might be necessary, so I did that. It still wouldn't burn, and in face, the drive wouldn't even recognize there was a DVD-R in the drive.

Any idea what might be wrong? Is it just that I need to buy lower speed DVD-rs?

The very nature of experience is ineffable; it transcends cognitive thought and intellectualized analysis. To be without experience is to be without an emotional knowledge of what the experience translates into. The desire for the understanding of what life is made of is the motivation that drives us all. Without it, in fear of the experiences what life can hold is among the greatest contradictions; to live in fear of death while not being alive.

I've never understood how a disc can have a speed.

Is it all just BS or are the discs physically different?

Never mind, I got to work by downloading another piece of firmware. I'm so psyched to have access to such great live music.

I use 8x disks on my 4x burner all the time. If it wasnt reading it maybe you need new firmware. I think that warning is talking about a few certain older pioneer drives that you could overheat them by using 4x disks in them or somthing like that.

No you don't, the media is backwards compatible.

I've never understood how a disc can have a speed.

The chemical reaction that occurs in the media has to take place quickly enough for the writing speed, otherwise, the laser will skip off the mark before the the burn is complete enough to be properly detected by the reading laser.

That said, fast media is backward-compatible with slower drives but not the other way around.
