Help me get my DVD player working again, please

Okay, I have a Samsung SD-608 DVD-ROM drive. I have only been able to get it to play DVD's a few times...years ago. It came pre-installed as a part of my HP Pavilion 8668c system. The system originally had Win98SE, but I have since upgraded to WinXPProSE.
Like I said, I've only had success getting it to play DVD's a few times after I got the system(even then it seemed unstable). It seems to work okay with CD's, but it will not read DVD's at all anymore. When I was searching for drivers(thought that might have been the problem), I found out that this particular drive is very problematic.
I've tried removing and re-installing different drivers...but haven't had any sucess. Maybe I haven't found the right one? Unfortunately, there is nothing listed for this drive on Samsung's or HP's website. Windows is not reporting any hardware problems, and there are no driver errors being reported. I think the problem may be that I need a different codec, but I am not sure. Changing the region settings has had no effect on the drive's ability to read DVD's.
I was wondering if anyone here might be able to help me get this thing reading DVD's again...as it is supposed to. Short of buying a new drive, I am out of ideas.

Find the FCC code on the drive. Look that up. You will probably be able to find the appropriate drivers by doing that.

My first thought is it is slowing dying. But like Seuss says, it might be a decoder problem. Go find some different ones, and see if that solves the problem. Good luck.

I upgraded firmware, and it still doesn't work.
I have Nero and Windows Media Player installed, as far as software. Are there an special codecs or anything that I may need?

That is your problem. You don't have a DVD player installed. The technology used in DVD players is protected by several patents. The owners of these patents require anybody that uses the technology to pay them money. Because of this, there is no such thing as a legal free DVD player. Some companies, such as Apple, provide a DVD player with the OS. The cost of the DVD royalties is included in the OS. Other companies, such as Microsoft, do not. Instead, they leave it up to you to purchase a DVD player from a third party. Once the third party becomes profitable, Microsoft will then include a "free" DVD player with the OS, thus destroying any competiton... but I degress...
So... you have two real options...
1) Purchase legal DVD player software and install it on your machine. For Winblows, WinDVD seems to be a popular choice.
2) Download free opensource player software and break patent laws when you use the software to watch a DVD. There are several out there... use google to find them... mplayer, xine, and VLC (video lan client) are all good.
I guess there is always 3) pirate something from option 1.
Personally, I like option 2 because the free players ignore all of the BS that the MPAA forces the industry to follow... things like first play restrictons (can't use the remote to skip the FBI warnings, etc) and region restrictions.

I don't think that is my problem. I now have PowerDVD installed, and I am still unable to play DVD's.
Any other ideas?

What happens with powerDVD installed? Can you open a DVD like a disk (from my computer) and see a VIDEO_TS directory with a bunch of .IFO, .VOB, and .BUP files?

It doesn't even recognize DVD's. It will only work with CD's for some reason.

Bad DVD player... the players have two different lasers, one to read DVDs and one to read CDs... sounds like the DVD laser is toast while the CD laser is still good. I see this quite often on older machines. Good news is DVD readers are getting really cheap. Burners are still a bit expensive. For a desktop machine, it is pretty easy to change out the player. Make sure you get the jumper setting correct on the new one. (Slave or master or cable select)
