How many dimensions do we experience?

We definately feel things in three dimensions.

Sight is two dimensional, in my opinion. That is why things we see can easily be represented on paper, since paper approximates a two dimensional space.

Hearing is a bit harder to classify. All sounds can be broken down into a series of tones, where each tone has a certain pitch and intensity. I think probably hearing is one dimensional.

However, bats are able to use echoes to approximate their surroudings, which is two dimensional like sight. Some humans can also do this to a certain degree.

I would argue that sight is three dimensional. It is two dimensional like a piece of paper but the fact that our eyes are spaced gives a sense of depth (the third dimension).

As far as the number of dimensions we experience I say six. I would say that each of our senses gives us a way to encrypt reality thus is a 'dimension' but there lies a hidden dimension which is our mind, the sixth (past the five senses). There are endless landscapes and ways to exist within each of our minds and is a unique dimension.

There are of course other dimensions we will never experience truly, but vicariously through technology. For example there are all kinds of electromagnetic waves of pure energy that pass all around us and even through us every day, but we lack the receptors to interpret these 'dimensions'. Who knows how many of these 'dimensions' exist throughout the universe, I don't think science has a very whole picture of all the different dimensions that exist. IMO only the grand designer can know the answer to this question.

I don't think depth perception is that critical to sight. Many animals have no depth perception and humans who lose an eye can still function pretty normal. I believe that sight exists in two dimensions of space, and within that space are color, brightness, shape recognition, depth perception and other things like that.

This is different than feeling where we actually have a sense of three dimensions.

Since I believe we process sight as three dimensional [up and down is +/- y(1), side to side is +/- x(2) and front to back, depth perception, is the z axis(3)] it is hard to imagine what you think 3-D would look like, so what do you think seeing in 3-D would be like? I am intrigued...

It is simply a matter of geometry.

The photoreceptor cells in your retina are set up in a plane. Because the retina it is set up as a plane, the images you see are two dimensional. The images we see contain no information as to where things are in 3-d space. Instead we assume where things aught to be based on depth perception, image recognition and experience.

This is different than the nerve cells that allow you to feel things, since they are distributed all over your body in three dimensions (though they are most concentrated in the skin).

If you were to "see" in three dimensions you would see entire objects inside and out simultaneously.

The image produced by one eye is indeed a 2-D image. That's why people that loose an eye have poor depth perception, they do not truly see in 3-D. They instead use a complex 2-D image [like high-quality graphics in movies or video games (on a 2-D screen)] to form an idea of the third dimension (depth). This complex 2-D image utilizes color, shading, size of objects relative to surroundings, focus, relative motion and other techniques to form an idea of the third dimension.

Yes! We see images based on depth perception, the third dimension. Our eyes can scan the 2-D image [y (up/down) and x (left/right)] but depth is the third (z). The brain takes two complex 2-D images and triangulates the depth (third dimension). This is calculated in your super computer brain: taking the known width and height of the picture of one eyes image, the unknown depth is calculated based on the difference of the depth dimensions from each of the 2-D images captured by each eye. Our depth is only fairly accurate to within about 30 feet.

I don't see with my nerves I feel with them there is a difference. Even if I were to feel an object I could only gain an idea of it's exterior shape and would have no sound knowledge of it's inside. Even if I were to close my eyes and feel a tennis ball I can gain an idea of it's shape and texture but lack the ability to see it's color or other visual traits.

We have 2 experiences of 1 dimension. 

We live in a non-dual reality that is dichotomous.

Reality in an objective sense can be called non-dual.

However, with the existence of a subjective sense, reality can be in duality.

One subjective reality perceived individually within a person, one objective reality separate from the individual which has observable deterministic properties

Observed and tested subjectively, prove to me that blue is blue. An agreement doesn't eqaul objectivity imo.

Data isn't subjective.

'Blue' is merely the name given to a specific wavelength of light.

Prove to me that gravity isn't objectively 9.8 m/s^2 on Earth.

Gravity is merely a name we have given to an occurrence we observe subjectively as are the numbers being used.imo At some point everthing is subjective ie the data has to be analyzed.
