Actually, I think it's an integral part of the human experience. If we lived only in each individual moment, were that possible, I think we would be reducing ourselves to the intellectual capacity of a newborn.

Planning is part of the fun of life. The future is something people use to improve their present--because the future is going to be your next present.

There is a distinction between planning for and thinking about the future and being a retard who believes the X-Files was a documentary. I think that is where notions of future events diverge from the original topic of this thread.

Re: When the December 2012 'prophecy' becomes a non-event... [Re: OrgoneConclusion]

My current thoughts on the 2012 prophecy are basically that we're living in some fucked up times, and people need something to hang onto.......either as hope of cosmic conciousness sweeping the world, or a foreboding that these are the end days.

A lot of folks seem to need something of this sort to hang onto.  Will the world change forever on December 12, 2012? Of course.......the world changes forever every second. Such is the nature of things. Do I think the world will end? Nope.  Do I think there will be a shift to cosmic conciousness? That would be fucking sweet, in fact, that's an understatement...no words can describe how cool that would be. Do I think it will happen though?  ....................................Nope.

Some folks think the world will end, others think some higher power will save us from ourselves. IMHO, and with no disrespect or offense intended, I believe that both are naive points of view. The world shall go on as it has for billions of years, and any positive cultural & positive changes will have to come from us, not some magical date when the stars align. I have nothing against hope; Lord knows we need it, especially these days. However; we can't just sit back and expect some higher power to fix our problems for us, we have to do it ourselves, which, sadly enough, I also highly doubt will happen.

Basically I'm just going to live my life to the fullest, experience all that I can, try to bring as many folks onto the same page as possible, & keep fighting the good fight, hoping that eventually enough folks will get it and we'll turn things around. I have a firm grasp of reality though, and my idealism has been tempered with realism over the years. I'm learning a lot, I'm having fun, I'm loving as much as I can........I'm living, which is exactly what I plan to be doing on December 22, 2012. Whatever happens, happens.......99-1 that life goes on as usual. If not, I'll be the first to seek out the believers in the new world and admit that I was wrong.

People were absolutely convinced prior to the year 1000 that the world was bound to end, due to some vague Christian prophecy surrounding Revelation. People, including the awesome superhuman Prince, seemed to think that 2000 was a significant year, as well. Keep that in mind when making half-baked prophecies.

Speculating that nothing will happen is about as pointless as saying something will happen. Why bother, who cares? I say we just wait and find out when the day comes, and worry about what's going on today, in the meantime.

The most likely believer response will be:

1. To claim the event happened on the non-physical plane.

In fact I've heard claims already.  A decade ago, even.  Rational people who use this sort of thing to weild power over irrational believers sometimes do plan ahead..  apparently.

Quote:
2. To point out some tragic, but relatively normal human event as evidence.

3. To quickly glom onto the next popular prediction.

Somewhat likely, but probably very fringe.

4. To learn from the fantasy and become a more rational being.

:rofl2:

Who knows, maybe this time will be different and someone will learn from the non-experience.
I'm fairly sure none of the 2000 / 2001 doomsayers learned anything, though.

You can find evidence of people clinging on to this sort of thinking pretty much at every point throughout history.

Personally, I'm hoping for a zombie apocalypse.
But I am a bit odd...  and I do sorta hope for that all the time, not just 5 years from now.

Saying that "nothing" will happen is not simply speculation. Nothing is the default until something happens. When someone says, "Nothing is going to happen in 2012. STFU," they actually mean, "I don't see why you think this very silly thing you talk about will happen. STFU." Which is actually a very reasonable response.

"Nothing" never happens. However, a specific something, based on ridiculous and misunderstood mythology, essentially never happens. Hence, "Nothing will happen. STFU."

Who knows, maybe this time will be different and someone will learn from the non-experience.

True Believers didn't learn anything from dozens of other End of the World predictions.

I doubt they'll learn anything this time around either.

My prediction is that when 2012 passes uneventfully just like all the other Ends of the World listed in the link above, the True Believers will pick a new date, probably the scheduled close pass of asteroid Apophis in 2029 and when that one doesn't pan out, they'll get another chance when Apophis swings by again in 2036.

So get ready: after 21012, 2029 and 2036 will become the new dates the world ends.

There WILL BE an event! It is simply ASTRONOMICAL, that's where 12.21.12 comes from.

If anyone wants me to explain it again I will...

There IS an event! It is simply ASTRONOMICAL

If you consider the cycle of the moon around the Earth or the Earth around the sun to be 'events' then I guess it's an event, but it's a common one that happens over and over about every 20,000 years and this is cycle number ~250,000.

And in 20,000 years, it'll happen again.

Nothing special.

A completion of a 25,000 year cycle has more significance than a monthly one.

It's not really significant at all.

Remember a few years ago when the planets were all "aligned" and holy crap something big was gonna happen?

And then nothing did?

Even though that's very rare, doesn't happen, blah blah blah, long cycle, blah blah blabbilty blah?
